Chapter 708
“Welcome, Mr. Cale,” one of the attendants greeted as he arrived that night.
Cale stepped out of the car in a hurry, his pace brisk and purposeful. He gave only a brief nod in acknowledgment; his attention already fixed on the person waiting for him. The man stood with his head lowered in respect, not daring to look up at his employer.
“Daniel,” Cale called, prompting the man to lift his gaze.
“Yes, Mr. Cale?”
“I’ve heard your report from Liu, but have you confirmed that my wife is alright?”
“Yes, Mr. Cale,” Daniel answered firmly. “Your personal doctor has already examined Mrs. Lydia. There’s nothing to worry about, except for Miss Naomi. It seems she’s in shock. As of now, she hasn’t been willing to leave her room.”
Cale exhaled slowly. “At least she’s safe, right?”
“Yes, Mr. Cale. I made sure of that.”
“Did you manage to get the license plate of the car that was chasing you?”
Daniel nodded at once. “Unfortunately, they were using fake plates, sir. We haven’t been able to trace them yet, but the investigation team has already requested assistance.”
Cale nodded, understanding. “Report any updates immediately. I won’t allow them to do as they please to my family.”
“Yes, Mr. Cale.”
Without another word, Cale continued inside the mansion. The atmosphere felt unusually quiet, heavier than it should have been. His steps quickened again, almost urgent, as he passed by staff members who greeted him without receiving more than the faintest acknowledgment. There was only one thing occupying his mind since he left the office, and it weighed on his breath, making each inhale feel tighter than the last.
The moment he stepped into the living room, his eyes found Lydia.
She was sitting on the sofa, composed, a book open in her hands as though nothing had happened. Her hair fell neatly over her shoulders, her expression calm, and for a brief second, all the tension that had been coiling inside Cale’s chest seemed to
dissolve.
“My love.” His voice dropped, softer than usual.
Lydia turned her head, a flicker of surprise crossing her face when she saw how quickly he had returned. “You’re already home?” she asked lightly, as if greeting an ordinary evening. She smiled, bright and untroubled, as though nothing had come close to threatening her life just hours ago.
But Cale didn’t answer,
He closed the distance in a few long strides, and without giving her a chance to react, pulled her into his arms. The embrace was tight. Too tight to be simple longing. Everything he had been holding back poured into it. He breathed in the soft trace of her perfume, his hands locking at her back as if to confirm she was truly there, whole, unharmed, real.
Lydia froze for a moment, her body stiff with surprise. “Cale?”
“Are you alright?” His voice was strained, almost hoarse. “Did they touch you?”
She blinked, then slowly softened into him, returning the embrace just as gently. “No. I’m fine.”
Just as Cale had done, Lydia let everything she had been carrying spill into that moment. The fear, the tension, all of it eased in the quiet exchange of warmth, wrapped in something that felt unmistakably like love. The lingering dread that had clung to her

thoughts began to fade.
Still, Cale didn’t let go. If anything, he held her tighter for a moment longer, drawing in a deep breath, as if only now allowing himself to believe it.
“Answer me clearly,” he said again, softer this time. “Are you hurt?”
Lydia shook her head, though her face remained pressed against his chest. “No. Nothing happened to me.”
Only then did Cale loosen his hold. He pulled back just enough to look at her, his eyes scanning her quickly, searching for even the smallest sign of injury. Finding none, he pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. Lydia’s eyes fluttered closed. His lips brushed her cheeks next, one after the other, before he leaned in and stole a brief, light kiss from her lips.
