On the deserted sidewalk under the streetlights, Claudia stood perfectly still, her gaze on York as cold as if he were a stranger.
She waited calmly for his outburst to subside before reminding him, "York, I am a single woman now. I can accept gifts from whomever I choose. I can wear clothes bought by whomever I choose. My life has nothing to do with you!"
Her voice was quiet but her tone was unbreakably firm.
York couldn't accept it. He shook his head frantically. "No, that's not what you really think!"
"Even if we're divorced," he insisted, "in my heart, you are still my wife, York's wife. I forbid you from accepting gifts from other men!"
A sarcastic smile touched Claudia's lips. "York, I am not your accessory, nor am I your private property. I don't care what you think. To me, you are already in the past."
Her forceful attitude caused York's emotions to spiral further out of control. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her toward him, his entire demeanor radiating extreme agitation.
"Hugh is an old fox!" he said to her. "He's been married, he has a son, and you've only known him for a short time. He throws a thirty-million-dollar dress at you right off the bat. Can't you see what his motive is?"
"Whatever his motive is toward me is my business," she retorted. "It has nothing to do with you!"
York lost control and pulled her into a tight embrace. "Claudia, you're mine! After everything we've been through, I won't let you say things like that!"
Claudia struggled in his arms, but he only held her tighter. In a fit of desperation, she opened her mouth and bit down hard on his chest.
York let out a muffled groan of pain but instinctively tightened his arms, trapping her even more securely. He buried his face in her shoulder, greedily inhaling her scent.
