"Claudia."
York's eyes immediately fell on the long, thin scratch on Claudia's face. He instinctively reached out to brush her hair aside to check the injury.
Claudia turned her head, avoiding his touch.
York stared at her, stunned. He remembered the vow he'd made to her on the island. His fingertips, which had already brushed her hair, curled slightly before he silently withdrew his hand.
When Sewell saw Claudia, his disgust was palpable. He pointed a finger at her and scolded, "It's you again! Nothing good ever happens when you're involved!"
Before Claudia could respond, York retorted, "Dad, what are you talking about?"
Sewell shot back, "Am I wrong? If it weren't for this woman, would your sister have gotten into a fight?"
Darleen couldn't help but clarify for Claudia's sake. "Dad, don't blame an innocent person. I just can't stand Shelly. I wanted to slap her!"
Sewell was about to scold his daughter but was stopped by Wendy.
Seeing both his son and daughter defending Claudia, Sewell bit back his anger and said no more.
Fiona spoke to Hamlin with conviction. "Uncle, Celia and I were there. It was that man, Mark, who brought people to threaten us. Miss Ferguson started the fight. There are security cameras at the entrance and inside the restaurant. One look will prove it."
Celia chimed in, "Mr. Quinn, Mrs. Quinn nearly had a miscarriage from the beating. Are you just going to let them go?"
The firm attitudes of Fiona and Celia gave Hamlin some of his confidence back.
He didn't want to offend the Ferguson family, but he couldn't let the matter drop. He pointed at Claudia and said, "President Ferguson, Mrs. Ferguson, out of respect for your family, I can drop the charges against Miss Ferguson."
Hamlin paused, his gaze shifting to York. "Mr. Ferguson, my wife was beaten without cause and almost miscarried. Someone has to be held responsible. You can take Miss Ferguson, but as for your ex-wife, I'm sure you won't—"
Before Hamlin could finish, York cut him off. "She may be my ex-wife, but her problems are my problems!"
Behind York, his father, Sewell, began to hiss angry reprimands.
Claudia, who had been silent all this time, finally spoke. She said to York, "Mr. Ferguson, you don't need to trouble yourself with my affairs."
