Hugh’s teasing tone kept the atmosphere light and easy.
Claudia felt no pressure at all and readily agreed. A single message from her, and Hugh had dropped everything to come help, even late at night. He had not only stood firmly by her side but had also openly challenged the Quinn family, one of the eight most powerful families.
After such a display of loyalty, she felt she owed him her gratitude. Besides, Hawley Ferguson was her godson. If Hugh was too busy, it was only right for her to help by attending a parent-teacher conference for him.
Later that night, at The Imperial Club.
“Have you lost your mind, drinking this much?” Peter snatched the glass from York’s hand.
York barely lifted his eyelids to look at Peter before slumping back onto the sofa. He was breathing heavily, but his chest felt so tight he thought he might suffocate.
Staring blankly at the ceiling, York muttered to himself, “I can’t break my promise to her again. I promised her, and I have to keep it.”
Peter cleared all the bottles from the table. “York,” he said, trying to reason with him, “you and Claudia can’t go back. It’s wise of you to finally accept that.”
York squeezed his eyes shut, a tear silently tracing a path from the corner of his eye. It was true. They couldn’t go back.
But seeing her so close yet unable to approach her, watching her get into another man’s car and drive away… it felt like his heart was being brutally carved out of his chest. The pain was driving him mad.
“I want to make it up to her,” York whispered, “but she won’t give me a single chance.”
Peter reminded him, “Haven’t you realized yet? Claudia doesn’t need you to make it up to her.”
The words were cruel, but Peter said them anyway. “York, the damage is done. You want to compensate her to make yourself feel better, to escape the guilt that’s tormenting you.”
“Just as you chose to hurt her back then, she is now choosing not to give you an outlet for your guilt,” Peter continued.
He had said it before: York and Claudia were both Scorpios. When they got together, it was either a perfect match or a fatal attraction.
