Late at night, outside the hotel.
York offered to drive Claudia and her parents home, but Claudia refused.
Felix said, "York, your family is still waiting for you in the room. You should go back and check on them."
With that, he took his wife, Jessica, to the side of the road to hail a cab.
Claudia seized the opportunity to draw a clear line with York. "York, you saw your family's attitude tonight. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say we're like fire and water, would it?"
York's dark eyes were fixed on her.
"I'm sorry you and your parents had to go through that," he said.
Claudia shook her head. "The moment the Watkins family went bankrupt, a gap opened up between you and me. What your grandfather and father are doing is, in a way, for your own good."
York looked down, silent.
Growing up, the phrase his father said to him most often was, 'I'm doing this for your own good.'
"You are the heir to a top-tier wealthy family," Claudia said. "I'm just an ordinary person. I even had to pull strings and use connections through my senior just to get the job I have now."
She paused briefly.
"Forget about marrying you," she continued. "I'm not even qualified to be your friend."
"So, let's keep our distance from now on. Fewer interactions. It's better for you, for me, and for everyone."
After speaking, Claudia turned and got into the taxi with her parents, not giving York a chance to reply.
York stood frozen, watching the taxi disappear into the distance, a clear panic in his eyes.
Late that night, Claudia and her parents returned to their new home.
Her brother, Eddy, opened the door for them, holding a bowl of instant noodles in one hand.
Seeing no one behind his parents and sister, Eddy asked thoughtlessly, "Didn't York drive you home?"
