York’s sudden mention of the sixty million stunned Ann, leaving her frozen in place. The strange looks from the crowd quickly snapped her back to reality.
Her shock gave way to an expression of utter hurt as she looked at York. She glanced around at the judging eyes, then faced York, her own eyes red-rimmed.
"York, your grandfather forced me to take that sixty million! He threatened my family! I haven't spent a single penny of it, believe it or not!"
With that, she covered her face and ran out, crying.
By publicly blaming Old Mr. Ferguson and making a swift exit, Ann left the crowd with little choice but to believe she had been wronged. As Ann passed Claudia, Claudia instinctively reached out to stop her.
But before she could even touch Ann’s sleeve, York grabbed her wrist and pulled her to his side.
They stared at each other in silence. Claudia’s eyes were full of questions. York's face was terrifyingly grim.
Sensing the tense atmosphere, Peter quickly tried to smooth things over. "Just a little drama, everyone. Nothing to worry about. York, Claudia, come on, it’s time to cut the cake."
York tightened his grip on Claudia’s wrist and turned to leave.
Unable to break free, Claudia was dragged along. "York, where are you taking me? We haven't cut the cake yet!"
"If you want cake," York said, "I'll bake you one every day from now on."
His face was a dark mask. He glanced back at Claudia, a sharp pain twisting in his chest. From the very beginning, she never had any intention of celebrating this birthday with him.
He quickened his pace, forcing Claudia into his car.
