York stood beside Claudia.
He turned his head to look at her. “And the life you want… is one without me.”
Claudia sighed. “You can be in it, just not as the most important one.”
She turned to face him. “You can be my York, just like Peter is.”
York’s eyes were red as he shook his head desperately. “But I love you!”
He lost control and pulled her into a tight embrace. “Claudia, I love you!”
“I want to marry you!” he cried.
She was his wife, his partner, the mother of his child.
Only after he lost her did he realize how important she was to him.
Only then did he understand what true love was.
Only then did he know that the person he truly loved had only ever been her.
In those days, every moment he lived was a living hell.
He died drowning in regret and pain.
Now that he had a second chance, he couldn't bear to lose her again.
Faced with York’s turmoil, Claudia was the picture of calm.
She broke free from his hold, taking a small step back to put some distance between them.
She looked him in the eye. “York, the person you love is Ann James, not me. If you didn’t have the memories of our last life, you’d be by Ann’s side right now, ready to give her the world. You wouldn’t be standing here in front of me with your eyes red from crying.”
“What do I have to do for you to believe that my heart has only ever belonged to you?” York cried out, his voice cracking.
He demanded, his composure crumbling, “What do I have to do to make you believe that the one I love is you, Claudia, not Ann?!”
As York grew more frantic, a flicker of worry crossed Claudia’s mind.
She fell silent for a moment.
Then she said, “York, put away your pathetic guilt and your need to compensate. In the last life and in this one, you’ve always made your choices with a clear mind. You don’t love me.”
