In the restroom, Claudia turned on the faucet.
Leaning with both hands on the counter, she stared at her reflection in the mirror.
She understood perfectly what Gideon and York had been saying, even if others didn't.
Neither of those men was going to make her life easy.
But tonight was the welcome party Peter and Darleen had thrown for her. She couldn't just leave early.
Claudia took several deep breaths, trying to rally her spirits.
Darleen walked up beside her and asked cautiously, "Claudia, did my brother do something to wrong you? Is that why you're not marrying him?"
Claudia turned off the water and sighed under her breath.
This was the mess she had made. Her intense, years-long, and very public pursuit of York was common knowledge in their circle.
Now, no one was willing to believe that she genuinely wanted to part ways with him.
Rae stepped forward, concerned. "Claudia, are you alright?"
Claudia shook her head.
She turned to Darleen. "Darleen, after the Watkins family went bankrupt, I relied on your brother. I liked him, but I was clinging to him like a lifeline. That wasn't love. Your brother helped me, took care of me, and has always seen me as a sister. We've already agreed to be like siblings for life."
Darleen nodded, only half-convinced.
Claudia sighed, weary to her bones.
After chatting for a bit, the three women headed back to the private room.
In the hallway outside, Claudia spotted York and Gideon, and her scalp tightened.
What were those two doing together?
"Dr. Watkins."
"Claudia."
York and Gideon spoke her name in unison, and both started walking toward her at the same time.
Claudia froze, forcing a smile onto her face.
Gideon glanced at York, gesturing for him to speak first. "Mr. Ferguson, please."
York countered, "After you."
Gideon insisted, "No, Mr. Ferguson, I insist."
She barely registered a word of the conversation that followed.
They played a couple more party games, but Claudia sat them out, using the excuse that she'd had too much to drink.
She kept her head down, shrinking into her seat, looking neither left nor right as she focused on eating.
Finally, the welcome party drew to a close.
Outside the entrance of The Imperial Club, people were saying their goodbyes.
York walked over to Claudia, his voice infinitely gentle. "You were drinking earlier. Let me drive you home."
Claudia shook her head. "You were drinking too, York. You should have your driver pick you up."
"My driver's already here," York said. "It's on my way."
Before he could finish, Gideon stepped in. "No need to worry, Mr. Ferguson. I'll see Dr. Watkins home safely."
The two men faced off, neither willing to back down.
Standing beside them, Peter sensed that things were about to get 'ugly'.
Seeing the standoff, Claudia rejected Gideon's offer as well. "You were drinking too, Gideon. You can't drive."
