Seeing his mother lying in a pool of blood, Backus immediately called the police.
The next morning, in the executive CEO’s office at Ferguson Group.
Mark knocked and entered. “Mr. Ferguson, Ann killed Laurel last night and fled. Selene and Hamlin are hiding her. The police have officially opened an investigation.”
York put down his work and stood up. “What’s the situation with the Harvest family?”
“Backus and Fiona brought relatives to the Harvest estate this morning to cause a scene,” Mark reported. “The Harvest family just held a press conference, severing all ties with Ann and promising to cooperate with the police investigation. The matriarch was so devastated by the news that she’s gone to Grace Cathedral to pray.”
York beckoned Mark closer.
“Leak the news that the matriarch is at Grace Cathedral.”
Grace Cathedral was in a remote location, with only one road in and out.
It was the perfect place for the police to capture a fugitive.
An hour later, in Gideon’s office.
York got straight to the point. “Find a work-related reason and get Claudia out of Capital City immediately.”
Gideon looked at him, confused. “What do you mean, Mr. Ferguson?”
“I won’t let any harm come to her,” York said firmly. “Just find a way to get her out of Capital City. She can come back in a week.”
That day on the street, Ann had realized that Claudia was the one who tricked her into returning to the country.
Now that Ann was cornered and desperate, it was entirely possible she would try to take her anger out on Claudia.
Not asking any more questions, Gideon replied, “I’ll arrange it right away.”
York left Westminster General Hospital without seeing Claudia.
About ten minutes after York left, Gideon personally informed Claudia that she was being sent to Portsborough for a business trip. “You’ll leave this afternoon.”
Although Claudia was a bit baffled, she followed the hospital’s arrangements without question.
At the airport, Claudia ran into Darleen and Peter.
Hamlin raised the belt and lashed her again. “You bitch! You’ve ruined me!”
The Quinn patriarch added, “You couldn’t even protect my grandson. What use are you to me? You bitch, just divorce my son already!”
Blood trickled from the corner of Selene’s mouth, her smile turning grotesque and terrifying. “You old bastard. I was with your son for years without any official status. I finally got a marriage certificate, and you think I’ll just leave because you say so?”
“You want a divorce?” Selene spat. “Give me five hundred million dollars. Otherwise, you can forget about it for the rest of your life!”
The patriarch cursed through clenched teeth, “You whore! We could sell you by the pound at a brothel and not make five hundred million! In your dreams!”
Hamlin brought the belt down on Selene again and again, ruthlessly.
“You bitch, how dare you threaten me!”
“How dare you demand money!”
