The old lady spoke and then departed.
Next, they began to discuss Justin and Cathy's marriage.
Mrs. Carter wanted to protest, but Robert stopped her with a glance.
This matter was set in stone; there was no room for negotiation.
Maggie asked smugly, "How much is the Carter family planning to give for the wedding settlement?"
"Settlement?" Mrs. Carter asked in surprise.
Maggie had heard that when the engagement was with Claire, Daniel and his wife had asked for two hundred thousand dollars as a gift.
She wasn't going to let that slip by.
"Yes, don't you give a financial gift for a marriage? We aren't asking for much, just two hundred thousand. Same as the eldest brother's family. That should be fine, right?" Maggie said.
Robert didn't speak, but Mrs. Carter disagreed immediately.
"Ha! You think your Cathy is made of gold? Two hundred thousand!"
The Whelan family asking for two hundred thousand was tolerable because they would have been in-laws with Dylan Sinclair. The Carters had endured it for that connection.
But what was this second branch? They dared to ask for two hundred thousand too!
"What are you saying? Is our Cathy not a person? If you could give Claire two hundred thousand, why should our family get less?"
"You think you can compare to Claire? To put it plainly, your Cathy shamelessly seduced my son and ruined his marriage. We haven't even settled the score with you yet. Marrying her is only out of respect for the old lady. And you still want money? Keep dreaming!"
"I'm telling you, we won't give you a single cent for this marriage. If Cathy doesn't want to marry, then don't. That suits me just fine. Maybe my son can win Claire back! Hmph!"
Mrs. Carter finished her rant and stormed off with a cold snort.
She felt she had the upper hand here. Not a dime would be paid!
Even if the old lady came back, she wouldn't pay!
"You... you people are too much..." Maggie was trembling with rage.
"Mom, stop it. I don't want the money. I just want to marry Justin!" Cathy tried to calm her mother.
