Hank knew exactly what kind of bloodbath that kind of technology would trigger in the corporate world.
"If this research actually succeeds, it's going to flip the entire medical industry upside down," Hank warned. "For the massive pharmaceutical conglomerates, it means their monopolies vanish overnight. Patents they've been cashing in on for decades will become worthless. Sky-high treatment fees and medical device markups will crash into the dirt."
"That's exactly why we've had so many 'accidents' since I started funding this for Laurence. People are terrified of this tech, and they've been trying to sabotage it from day one." Hank's voice turned ice-cold. "That's why the human trials failed catastrophically last time. I finally gave the lab an ultimatum: get it right, or I pull the plug on the whole project."
"I know, Hank. I understand the risks," Loyce said.
"Since it's for Lucian, I'll take you there myself tomorrow." Hank looked her up and down, eyeing her borrowed, oversized clothes. "But before we go anywhere, you are taking a hot shower and putting on something comfortable."
With Lucian finally out of the woods, the massive weight on Loyce's chest lifted, and she allowed herself to properly crash in the safety of her brother's fortress.
She had been here once before when treating Laurence, and combined with her reputation among his men at the Ruby Camp, everyone treated her with absolute reverence.
She slept deeply, only waking the next morning to the sharp, violent sound of glass shattering somewhere in the mansion.
Loyce's eyes snapped open. She threw on a robe and followed the noise to a massive home office.
Coffee was splattered across the hardwood floor. She stepped inside, carefully avoiding the ceramic shards. Hank was standing by the window with his back to her, roaring into his phone.
"I'm telling you right now, a breakup is not happening!"
"Who is he?! Who the hell did you leave me for?!"
Whatever the person on the other end said made the air in the room turn suffocatingly dark. Hank spun around, his rugged, handsome face twisted into an expression of sheer, terrifying rage.
Loyce had never seen him lose control like this.
The moment Hank realized she was standing there, he immediately reined in his fury. He hung up the phone, crossed the room in three massive strides, and literally lifted her by the waist, placing her safely out in the hallway. "Watch your step! You saw the glass, why would you walk in there? What if you cut your feet?"
"Is it Giselle?" Loyce asked bluntly. "Are you guys having problems?"
Hank's jaw clenched. He stared at the floor, the violent tension still rolling off him.
