Sunny's prediction came true. The post-disaster cleanup was just as demanding as the initial setup had been.
After a night of observation at the hospital, Victoria, who had been given a shot to reduce her fever, returned to the project site with the rest of the team.
The container dormitories in the main area were a mess, caked in mud. Sunny was shoveling sludge out of hers. "This isn't a job, it's a boot camp."
A colleague overheard and chimed in, trying to make light of the situation. "I think I've cleaned up enough mud to last a lifetime."
"That's it. As soon as we get our bonuses, I'm getting the best massage money can buy. Otherwise, my back is going to give out before I'm thirty," Sunny said, putting down her bucket and straightening up, hands on her hips. "I just wonder how much longer we'll be stuck here. If I stay any longer, I'm going to lose my mind."
Her colleague teased her, "Weren't you the one saying just a few days ago that you could stare at Mr. Shawn's handsome face all day and would be happy to stay here forever?"
Sunny mumbled, "That would require actually seeing him! Aside from a glimpse from afar when he brought Victoria back from the hospital, I haven't seen a shadow of him in days—only Assistant Hawk. Victoria, do you think Mr. Shawn has already gone back to Imperial Capital?"
Sensing gossip, the colleague's eyes lit up and she sidled closer. "Yeah, Mr. Shawn went into the mountains that day, and Designer Sanger was among the trapped villagers. We don't know Mr. Shawn, but you, Designer Sanger, you shared a life-or-death experience with him. You must know where he is."
Victoria's cleaning motions faltered. The image of them, half-naked and locked in a passionate kiss that morning, flashed through her mind.
"You're overthinking it," she said, her grip on the rag tightening as she forced the memory away. "I haven't spoken to Mr. Shawn."
"Huh? No way!"
Victoria took a deep breath, not wanting to explain further. She found an excuse to leave. "I'm going to check on how the office move is going."
With that, she turned and left without a backward glance.
The others wanted to press her, but Sunny shot a meaningful look at Victoria's retreating back, then spread her arms to block them. "Alright, that's enough. Victoria said no, so stop asking. She's still recovering, for goodness' sake."
Chastened by Sunny, the group dropped the subject.
Alone in the office, Victoria finally had some peace. She took down the documents she had moved to the top of the bookshelf to protect them from the floodwaters and began sorting them into categories.
Her cold hadn't fully cleared up yet. After just a short while of organizing, she felt a throbbing pain in her temples, like a thousand tiny needles.
Suddenly, a glass of warm water was placed in front of her.
Victoria looked up, startled. Sunny smiled and handed her a couple of pills. "I had a feeling you hadn't taken your medicine today."
"Sunny, you—"
