When the chief engineer arrived, Elias was still lost in thought. Following his line of sight, the engineer glanced in the direction he had just come from, a look of understanding in his eyes.
"Mr. Shawn, that's our project's lead designer, Victoria. A very talented young woman. I reviewed her design proposals when I first arrived, and I have to say, even some well-known designers would struggle to reach her level of skill."
Elias's eyes darkened. "You seem to have a high opinion of her."
The new chief engineer was a veteran of the company, and unlike others, he was more relaxed around Elias. "I admire her greatly. It's rare these days to find young talent with such a gift for architectural design. Someone with her level of skill and creativity is one in a million."
He then changed the subject, a hint of regret in his voice. "If she hadn't told me she already has a mentor, I would have done everything in my power to take her on as my apprentice."
"She has a mentor?" Elias's brow furrowed slightly as he glanced at Hawk.
Hawk shook his head, indicating he knew nothing about it.
The chief engineer, oblivious to the silent exchange, replied, "Yes. But when I asked who her mentor was, she said it wasn't convenient to say. I wonder who was lucky enough to get such a promising student."
Victoria was exceptionally talented in design and had a mentor guiding her...
The more Elias heard, the more alien she seemed. His gaze returned to her slender figure, his expression unreadable.

After walking around the entire project site, Victoria felt a dull ache in her ankle. The office was still some distance away, but she couldn't bring herself to walk any further.
She found a large stone to sit on and began massaging her ankle.
Suddenly, her phone rang.
Victoria looked at the caller ID and answered, "Grady."
"Victoria? Your voice sounds hoarse. Do you have a cold?" Grady asked with concern.
"No, I just finished a long meeting, did a lot of talking," Victoria said, clearing her throat with a slight cough. "Why the sudden call? Is there any news on the investigation?"
"Not yet. I'm still looking into it, but there are too few leads to go on."
Victoria understood. She had been so busy with the project that she hadn't even asked Cerys about getting the internship records from the university. She decided it was best to keep it from Grady for now, in case it turned out to be a dead end.
"Victoria, there's something I might need you to do for me."
"Okay."
Grady paused, then chuckled. "You agreed without even asking what it is?"
Victoria stopped rubbing her ankle and smiled faintly. "You're my brother. It's not like you're going to sell me off. Growing up, you and Dad always tried to handle everything yourselves. It's not every day you ask me for a favor, so of course I'll say yes."
Two years ago, to protect her and her brother, her father had taken all the blame and criticism himself.
Victoria had sworn to herself that she would never let something like that happen again.
Grady's voice came through the phone, steady and calm.
