Old Mr. Shawn couldn't hold back the curse.
"Pfft—"
Chuck, seeing Old Mr. Shawn this infuriated for the first time, burst out laughing. The next moment, two pairs of eyes landed on him. He coughed guiltily, immediately fell silent, and slipped out of the hospital room.
Old Mr. Shawn huffed. "Don't think I don't know what you're up to. You want me to stay here so you can bring that adopted daughter from the Vale family to see me? Don't even think about it! You're not the only one who can be the head of the Shawn family. If you push me too far, I'll replace you in a heartbeat!"
Elias's narrow eyes half-closed. "Who said I was bringing her to see you?"
Old Mr. Shawn paused. "You're not?"
"No."
Confused, Old Mr. Shawn asked, "Then what kind of stunt are you pulling, insisting I stay in the hospital?"
Before Elias could explain, he added, "And don't give me any of that 'it's for your own good' nonsense. I'm not buying it. If you don't give me a reasonable explanation today, I'm leaving this hospital, no matter what you say!"
"You want my help? Ha! You already chased away the perfect wife I picked out for you!"
Elias frowned. After a few seconds of silence, he said, "The perfect wife you picked is still here."
Old Mr. Shawn was baffled.
He turned his head just in time to hear Elias's low voice again. "But if you leave the hospital now, then she'll really be gone."
"What… What do you mean?"
Elias looked at him and explained, "Victoria and I haven't officially finalized the divorce. I made an agreement with her that we would only get the certificate after you're discharged from the hospital."
At this, Old Mr. Shawn's spirits instantly lifted. "You've changed your mind? You don't want to divorce Victoria anymore?"
Elias didn't answer.
After a moment, he stood up and picked up his suit jacket. "I've said my piece. Whether you stay or go is your decision. As for my business with Victoria, that's none of your concern."
With that, Elias strode out of the room.
Old Mr. Shawn glared at his retreating back, raising his cane as if he wanted to hurl it at him. "You brat! I'm your grandfather! Is that any way to talk to me?!"
But by the time he finished, Elias was long gone.
