The recording ended abruptly on Tamara’s scream.
Everyone in the room could guess what happened next—Tamara had jumped to prove her innocence, and the tide of public opinion had suddenly turned.
All the color drained from Genevieve’s face. She watched Victoria walk toward her, stumbling backward in panic.
All eyes were on her now, their gazes like daggers in her back.
“It wasn’t me… It wasn’t me… She lost her balance and fell. It had nothing to do with me…” she stammered, her voice weak.
Meanwhile, a video began playing on the screen.
In it, Tamara was sitting in a wheelchair, facing the camera. Her face was a sickly pale.
She said, “Victoria, I’m so sorry. I know that nothing I say now can earn your forgiveness. It was my cowardice that made me hide in my little safe zone for so long.”
“Six years ago, I knew that Genevieve had tampered with your computer. I knew you were being unfairly blamed, but I never had the courage to tell you the truth. When I was in the hospital, you came to see me. There were so many times I wanted to see you, to tell you everything. But in the end, I was too scared. I was afraid you wouldn't believe me, and I was afraid Genevieve would retaliate against my parents and my sister. I’ve seen how much my sister loves architecture, and I’ve seen my father work late into the night just to provide for us. I couldn’t bear the thought of them losing everything because of me.”
“I… I had no choice. So I selfishly left you to face that storm alone. I let them blame you, and I became Genevieve’s accomplice.”
“I kept this secret for six years. In all that time, I haven’t had a single good night's sleep. Every time I wake up, I’m filled with regret, but I’m too weak to speak the truth. Watching my parents’ and sister’s resentment toward you grow day by day… I didn’t know what to do. So I just hid in my shell like a coward, pretending it wasn’t happening.”
“Living like this… it’s so tiring.” Tamara’s eyes were red. “Victoria, you were once a ray of sunshine in my dull life. But… I was the one who blocked out that light. I’m sorry, Victoria. I’m so, so sorry.”
“If there’s a next life, I hope… I hope we can still be friends.”
The hall fell into a heavy silence.
