“Hi, your total is fifty-three dollars. Will that be scan-to-pay or cash?”
The drugstore employee asked as she packed the sanitary pads and painkillers into a bag for the distracted Victoria standing at the counter.
“Oh, card,” Victoria snapped back to reality. She took out her phone, about to open the camera app, when she suddenly paused and added, “Excuse me, do you sell pregnancy tests here?”
The employee looked up at Victoria.
Five minutes later.
Back in the car, Victoria broke a painkiller in half and handed it to Sunny, who was curled up in her seat.
“Take this first. It should help. I’ll take you home now.”
Sunny was in too much pain to even speak. She took the pill and swallowed it dry without waiting for water.
“Victoria, maybe I should just find a shop nearby and use their restroom, otherwise…” A cramp seized her, and Sunny clutched her lower abdomen, feeling the warm flow starting. She pushed through the pain to continue, “Otherwise, it’ll be a problem if I get your car dirty.”
Victoria stepped on the gas, pulling away from the curb.
“It’s just a car wash. Not a problem,” she said, glancing at Sunny’s pale face. “In your state, if I let you go looking for a restroom and you passed out from the pain, that would be a real problem for me.”
She adjusted the controls on the center console, reclining the passenger seat. “Lie back and rest. Don’t talk too much, save your strength.”
Sunny curled up on her side and mumbled a complaint, “In my next life, I am definitely not coming back as a woman. It’s too hard. Not only do you bleed every month, but you have to suffer through this killer pain.”
“So you’ll be a man in your next life?” Victoria teased her.
“Nope.” Sunny shook her head. A thought made the corners of her mouth lift slightly, the conversation a welcome distraction. “I want to be Dawn. Just eat and sleep all day with no worries, and I’d have a gentle owner like you.”
Victoria smiled. “Alright, I’ll go talk it over with Dawn. We can switch places in the next life.”
