“Genevieve used to suffer from severe depression.”
Elias seemed to be explaining. After a long silence, he continued in a low voice, “Two years ago, if the old man hadn't forced her to go abroad, the Vale family wouldn't have deemed her useless and forced her to marry Henry. She was abused by him, and that’s when she developed depression…”
“Ultimately, I can’t escape responsibility for what she’s become. Besides, she saved my life. I owe her.”
“And what about Victoria?” Lucian asked.
The man’s expression clearly faltered at the question, his features becoming complex.
Lucian said calmly, “Jonah Chase told me you messaged him late one night a few days ago, asking how to win a woman over. I thought you’d finally figured out your feelings for Victoria, but now it seems you still don’t get it.”
“Victoria was the one who reported Genevieve. I also heard she gave the police the letter Abbey wrote, and they’ve decided to reopen the investigation into Grady’s accident. At the funeral, Victoria was so certain that Genevieve killed Grady…”
Elias’s brow furrowed. “I already told you, there’s no way Genevieve had the time or motive to harm Grady. Jonah looked into it and found nothing. What Victoria said at the funeral was just her refusing to accept reality—”
“But what if it’s true?” Lucian interrupted, cutting him off.
Elias’s eyes darkened, but he said nothing.
“Jonah didn’t find anything, but the fact that the case is being reopened proves Victoria might not be entirely wrong. Have you ever considered what Victoria will think if it turns out Grady’s death really is connected to Genevieve, and you’ve just bailed her out of jail?”
“If she’s upset, I can explain it to her. After Garnett is released, I’ll inject capital into The Sanger Group to help them rebuild. I can compensate her in every way I can. I can even remarry her, make her Mrs. Shawn again.”
“And did you ask Victoria if she wants any of that?”
Lucian’s tone was earnest. “Elias, you always say that Victoria and Old Mr. Shawn forced Genevieve into her current situation, but…”
“If Genevieve truly didn’t want to leave, could Old Mr. Shawn have really broken her legs and shipped her abroad? Or do you really see Victoria as such a despicable woman?”
