Victoria froze.
Garnett noticed her shocked expression and frowned. "What? You didn't know?"
Victoria snapped back to reality and quickly masked the sorrow in her eyes. "I knew. Grady told me. I… I just didn't expect Tobias to have told you already."
"Is that so? Then why did you look so panicked just now when I mentioned your brother was in The Kingdom of Thracia?"
Victoria knew she'd never been a good liar.
With her emotions in turmoil, Garnett's skeptical question made her fear she would give herself away. She got up to pour a glass of water, turning her back to him as she tried to make her voice sound natural.
"I wasn't. I was just trying to figure out how to explain why Grady couldn't be here this time. I was lost in thought."
"Last time, Grady couldn't come see you with me because of work. You didn't say anything, but I know you must have been a little disappointed."
"So this time, with you being released and Grady away on a business trip again, I was afraid you'd be even more upset. I was just trying to think of a better way to put it…"
At that, Garnett smiled. "It's not like I'll never see him again. It's nothing to be upset about."
Victoria's hand tightened around the water glass. She was silent for a few seconds before walking over and handing the other glass of warm water to Garnett. "Yes, you're right. It's not like we'll never see him again."
"By the way, you mentioned last time that your brother has someone he's interested in. It's been over a month now. How are things going? Has he won her over yet?" Garnett asked.
Grady's crush…
How was she supposed to answer that?
Should she say that Grady had given his heart to the wrong person, who dealt him the cruelest blow? Or should she say that because of a ridiculous, tragic twist of fate, Grady had become the only pawn sacrificed on his so-called beloved's chessboard?
Victoria’s lips pressed into a thin line. It was a long time before she answered, her voice hoarse, "…I think he has."

At a county hospital in Brentwood, outside a private room.
Leilani nodded, her gaze inadvertently falling on the man's handsome face. She quickly looked away and turned to Abbey. "Miss Prescott, my colleague told me you paid fifty thousand dollars for Mr. Sanger's hospital fees yesterday and that you're looking to hire a private nurse. Are you planning on leaving?"
Abbey gently wiped the remaining shaving cream from Grady's chin with a damp towel and hummed in agreement.
Getting a direct answer, Leilani pursed her lips. She knew it wasn't her place to ask, but she couldn't help herself. "Do you have to go?"
Abbey's gaze was fixed on Grady. After a moment, she said, "I have to."
"Why?"
"Because I did something wrong. Terribly wrong," Abbey's throat felt tight, her voice strained. "And I have to pay the price for my mistake."
Leilani didn't quite understand. "What about Mr. Sanger? Are you just going to leave him?"
As soon as the words were out, her eyes met Abbey's. "After I'm gone, it won't be long before someone comes looking for him," Abbey said. "He'll get better treatment and care."
Leilani opened her mouth, wanting to say, 'But you don't look like you want to leave him at all.' But just then, she saw Abbey's eyes turn red as tears streamed down her face.
