It was as if a bomb went off in her head.
The color drained from Victoria's face. After a long moment, she found her voice, which came out as a faint tremble.
"Nurse, what… what did you say?"
"Ma'am, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm sure your son would want you to be strong—"
Son!
Just as she was about to be consumed by a tidal wave of grief, those two words shocked Victoria back to her senses. She grabbed the nurse's wrist. "What son? Did you just say the patient in room 211 was my son?"
The nurse winced in pain and took a sharp breath. She assumed the woman was on the verge of a breakdown, unable to accept reality after losing her child, which was why she kept asking for confirmation.
Her face filled with sympathy, and she opened her mouth to offer more words of comfort.
Suddenly, a familiar voice called out from behind her.
"Victoria?"
Victoria spun around.
Garnett, dressed in a hospital gown, was looking at her with a kind smile. Tobias stood beside him, supporting his arm.
Victoria's eyes reddened. Forgetting everything else, she ran over and threw her arms around Garnett, her voice trembling with lingering fear.
"Dad, Dad…"
"Silly girl, I'm right here. What are you crying for?" Garnett patted her back affectionately, soothing her like he did when she was a child. "No more tears. There's no need to cry."
Hearing that, Victoria laughed through her tears.
The young nurse, who had been trying to figure out how to console the grieving woman, was stunned to see the heartwarming scene of a father and daughter embracing.
It slowly dawned on her what had happened. She rubbed the back of her head. "Oh, so you're not that little boy's family? But you said you were looking for the patient in room 211, so I just assumed…"
Victoria pulled back from Garnett's embrace, looking just as confused as she turned to Garnett and Tobias.
Tobias chuckled and explained, "I only got a new text from my colleague after I arrived at the hospital, telling me that Mr. Sanger had been moved to the VIP special care unit. I wanted to tell you, but you were walking so fast. By the time I caught up, you were already in the elevator."
Garnett continued, "I just finished my routine check-up and was wondering why you two hadn't arrived yet. The moment I got on the elevator, I ran right into Tobias."
"So, it was all just a big misunderstanding," the young nurse concluded.
Victoria hadn't expected such a string of coincidences. She raised a hand to wipe the moisture from the corner of her eye, the knot of anxiety in her chest finally loosening.
"Victoria, what are you thinking about?" As soon as the nurse left with her equipment, Garnett rolled down his sleeve and noticed Victoria staring into space.
Victoria snapped back to reality. "It just feels a little unreal."
"Why?"
She got up and sat on the edge of the bed next to him. "Before, every time Grady and I came to see you, we had to watch the clock, counting how many minutes were left in our half-hour visit, counting how long until we could see you again, counting until the day we could finally be reunited…"
After two years of being apart more than they were together, and with everything that had happened recently, seeing Garnett in person felt surreal.
Garnett's heart ached. "Silly girl, from now on, you can see me whenever you want, for as long as you want. Our family of three will never be separated again."
A family of three…
There was no family of three anymore.
But how could she tell her father? The truth would come out eventually; she couldn't hide Grady's death forever.
Victoria's eyes dimmed, and a lump formed in her throat. Her lips trembled. "Dad, Grady… he—"
"I know, he's in The Kingdom of Thracia scouting a project and hasn't returned yet," Garnett said with a smile. "Tobias told me everything."
