For the first couple of days after Garnett was released, Mr. Flint had returned to his hometown, leaving Victoria to care for him alone. Worried she would be exhausted running around by herself, Tobias had postponed a few of his minor surgeries until today.
As a result, it wasn't until after ten o'clock that night, when he finally got out of surgery, that Tobias heard about Garnett's coma and Grady's narrow escape from death from a collea Holte on duty.
He was frantic. Without even changing out of his scrubs, he rushed to Garnett's hospital room.
Inside the room, Mr. Flint was coming out of the inner bedroom with a tray of food. He greeted Tobias upon seeing him, "Mr. Holt."
"Mr. Flint." Tobias nodded slightly, his gaze immediately falling on the untouched food in Mr. Flint's hands. His brow furrowed almost imperceptibly. "Is this Victoria's dinner?"
"Yes, Mr. Holt. You're just in time. Please, try to persuade Victoria. She hasn't eaten all day. With what happened to Mr. Sanger, and now Grady..."
Mr. Flint's voice trailed off as he sighed, his eyes filled with an unshakable sorrow. "I understand why the young lady is so upset. One thing after another... anyone would have trouble accepting it all at once, let alone have an appetite. But I'm truly worried her body won't be able to take it if she keeps this up."
Tobias looked past Mr. Flint, his gaze landing on Victoria, who sat motionless by the hospital bed.
Victoria didn't quite remember how she had fallen asleep that afternoon. When she woke up, it was already dark.
Perhaps the sleep had calmed her nerves somewhat. After getting up, she had gone to Grady's bedside and spoken to him for over half an hour before returning to Garnett's room.
The doctor had said Garnett would wake up in the evening, so she stood watch by his bed, wanting to see her father regain consciousness with her own eyes. Only then could she truly feel at ease.
Tobias lowered his gaze and reached for the tray. His voice was gentle. "Mr. Flint, you've had a long day, too. Go get some rest. I'll take care of Victoria."
