"I won't give her to you."
Tobias met Elias's bone-chilling gaze without a trace of fear. His voice was cold. "Besides, Victoria is a person, not an object. I have no right to give her to anyone. Also, Mr. Shawn, I shouldn't have to remind you of the fact that you and Victoria are already divorced, should I?"
"Two years ago, I was a step too late, and that's why she married you. Now that you're divorced and she's single again, I won't give her up to you again."
In an instant, the temperature in the living room seemed to plummet to freezing. The atmosphere between the two men grew tense, like a powder keg ready to explode.
For a long moment, neither man backed down.
Mr. Flint came out to get a glass of water and saw Tobias still in the living room. Puzzled, he walked over. "Mr. Holt, I thought you were taking Victoria to—"
Before he could finish, the man standing opposite Tobias came into view. "Mr. Shawn, what brings you here?"
Elias's lips pressed into a hard line. After a few moments of silence, he answered stiffly, "I was just passing by."
Passing by? Who wanders around a hospital in the middle of the night? Besides, the only patients in this special care wing were Grady and Garnett. Where could Elias possibly be 'passing by' to?
"I see." Mr. Flint saw through the lie but didn't expose it. He turned to Tobias. "Mr. Holt, please take Victoria to the bed in the lounge. You must be tired holding her like this."
Tobias nodded. With his gaze lowered, he carried Victoria toward the adjacent room.
Elias's dark eyes narrowed. He took a step forward, intending to go straight to the lounge and take Victoria himself, but Mr. Flint, as if anticipating his move, subtly blocked his path.
"Mr. Shawn, it's getting quite late..."
As someone who had been by Garnett's side for years, managing all of the Sanger family's affairs, big and small, Mr. Flint had developed a habit of being meticulous and discreet. He stopped mid-sentence, but his intention of seeing him out was perfectly clear.
At the same time, the lounge door closed completely, cutting off Elias's line of sight.
The veins on Elias's temples bulged slightly. His expression darkened as he met Mr. Flint's gaze for a few seconds. Then, without another word, he turned and left the suite.
Mr. Flint's voice followed him from behind. "Goodbye, Mr. Shawn."
Thump.
The next moment, the suite door was pushed shut with a deliberate, contained force.
-
Victoria nodded and turned to leave.
The moment she turned, the smile vanished from her face, and a bitter taste rose in her throat.
Although she had tried to mentally prepare herself countless times, every time she saw the worry for Grady creasing Garnett's brow, her heart felt as if it were being squeezed by an invisible hand, the pain unbearable.
The walk from the inner room to the living room's restroom was only a few steps, but Victoria's feet felt as if they were weighed down by lead, each step draining most of her strength.
At The Cloudscape, inside a private room.
Lucian had stepped out to take a work call. When he returned, he saw Jonah Chase on Elias's phone.
He clearly stated the room number twice to the person on the other end before hanging up, then furtively put the phone back where he found it.
Lucian glanced at the man lying on the sofa in the far corner of the room. An arm was draped over his eyes, and he was half-drunk, completely oblivious to someone handling his phone.
He walked over and kicked Jonah's leg. "Jonah, you got a death wish?"
