Elias was gone.
He had just hung up the phone and walked out of the private room with long strides, not even taking a moment to glance back at Victoria.
Victoria stared at the open door, feeling a bit dazed. When she was on the sofa, Elias hadn't been far from her. Besides, the room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop, so she had vaguely overheard words like "Lady Laurel," "hospital," and "fainted" coming from the phone.
For Elias to leave in such a hurry, especially after a call from the Shawn estate, Victoria didn't need to think hard to guess it had something to do with Laurel.
But…
Laurel was always so health-conscious and had never had any major health problems. Why would she suddenly faint?
Victoria's brow furrowed. She thought about it for a moment but couldn't come up with an answer, so she decided to drop it. After all, she and Elias were divorced, which meant she had no connection to the Shawn family. Laurel's well-being was none of her concern.
Victoria didn't stay in the room for long. She got up, left the private room, and took the elevator to exit The Cloudscape.
Ding!
The elevator stopped at the ground floor, and the doors slowly slid open. Victoria looked up, about to step out, when she saw Hawk standing right outside.
She was taken aback. "Mr. Hawk?"
Hawk stepped forward, holding the elevator door open. "Miss Sanger, Lady Laurel had an accident in Miss Vale's room. She hit her head and passed out, so Mr. Shawn rushed over to handle it. He asked me to wait here and drive you home."
Victoria's eyebrows twitched, a hint of surprise in her heart. "She fainted in Genevieve's room?"
Years ago, when Elias's father died in a car crash, Laurel couldn't handle the blow of losing her husband so soon after their wedding. She left right after giving birth to Elias.
She was gone for sixteen years. It wasn't until Elias was a sophomore in high school that she remembered she had a son and wanted to return to make up for the motherly love he had missed.
Genevieve had a history of self-harm. Her hospital room, aside from essential medical equipment and a bed, was practically stripped of anything that could be used for harm. It didn't even have a nightstand.
In a room like that, there were only two ways to accidentally hit your head.
Either you got into an argument and were accidentally pushed over, hitting a piece of equipment or the wall, or someone held your head and slammed it against something.
Either way, Genevieve couldn't be blameless.
What Victoria was curious about was, given that Laurel treated Genevieve even better than she treated Elias, what could have happened between them to cause such a violent conflict?
"Yes," Hawk explained. "The nurse said Miss Vale woke up this afternoon. When Lady Laurel found out, she made some soup and brought it over. But not long after, the police received a call and came to take Miss Vale's statement."
"The moment Miss Vale saw the police, she became extremely agitated. She was either dropping to her knees and begging or trying to slam her head against the wall. Lady Laurel went to stop her, but Miss Vale accidentally pushed her. Lady Laurel hit a piece of equipment... and fainted."
