Victoria ate distractedly.
Her mind was consumed with the scene from The Cloudscape last night, compounded by the cheerful sounds of Garnett and Elias playing chess that occasionally drifted from the inner room.
The laughter fell on her ears like countless tiny hands pulling at her heart, tangling her insides into an indecipherable knot.
After eating, she went in to see Garnett, planning to find an excuse to leave. She could wait in Grady's room next door until Elias was gone.
If she couldn't fight him, she could at least avoid him.
The Shawn Group was enormous, with hundreds of thousands of employees. Even after layers of screening, there were hundreds, if not thousands, of proposals that reached the CEO's office daily, awaiting his decision. He couldn't possibly have that much time to waste at the hospital.
However, plans never go as expected.
The moment Garnett saw her, his eyes darted between Victoria and Elias. "Victoria, I'm suddenly craving that Tuscan Bean Soup you used to make. Do you have time today? Could you make it for me again?"
"Okay, I'll go buy the ingredients then," Victoria said after a brief pause, quickly recovering and turning to leave.
"Hey! Why are you in such a hurry to go? I'm not finished talking," Garnett called after her. "I checked, and it's at least a ten-minute drive to the nearest big supermarket. You just ate, so you might get drowsy. Have Elias drive you. I won't be at ease otherwise."
As soon as Garnett finished speaking, Victoria felt a deep gaze land on her.
It wasn't oppressive, but it made her feel an uncomfortable sense of being seen through.
"Dad, I can go by myself. Elias—" Victoria unconsciously bit her lip, feeling her tone was a bit harsh. She softened it, forcing a smile before continuing, "Elias has been playing chess with you all morning. He must have a lot of work to deal with this afternoon. He doesn't have time for little things like grocery shopping and making soup."
Garnett turned to Elias, shooting him a meaningful look as he asked, "Elias, you don't have anything urgent to do today, do you?"
Elias got the hint and replied in a low, deep voice, "Dad I'll go with Victoria."
