Elias’s gaze darkened slightly, and he suppressed the urge to pull her into his arms.
Just then, Victoria finished the last step of changing the dressing, neatly snipping off the excess gauze and letting out a soft sigh.
“All done. Ouch…”
As she looked up, her forehead slammed right into Elias’s chin without warning.
The sudden impact jolted Victoria awake. She finally realized that in her effort to see clearly and avoid touching the wound, she had leaned forward so much that she was almost pressed against Elias’s chest.
So painful!
Was this man’s jaw made of stone?
She couldn’t help but suck in a sharp breath, instinctively raising a hand to her aching forehead.
But a large hand beat her to it.
His palm was warm and dry as it rested on the spot she’d hit.
She froze, looking up at the owner of the hand.
Elias hadn’t expected Victoria to look up so suddenly either. Remembering how even small bumps could leave bruises on her for half a month, he had covered her temple almost by instinct.
As his fingertips touched her skin, he felt a slight unevenness.
He moved his fingers away and looked closer, revealing a raised scar.
The scar had faded over time and was usually hidden by the stray hairs that had been mussed by her earlier movements, making it hard to notice.
Elias stared at the scar. “The scar on your forehead—”
Victoria shrank back, dodging Elias’s hand. At his words, she subconsciously touched the scar on her temple, a faint pang shooting through her chest.
But she quickly suppressed the ache and said nonchalantly, “I was reckless when I was little. I got it trying to save a dog.”
With that, Victoria swiftly packed up the first-aid kit and stood up.
