The cold wind howled, drowning out Elias’s voice completely.
Victoria’s mind was consumed with thoughts of the baby in her belly. She squeezed her eyes shut and took one deep breath after another, forcing herself to calm down, not paying any attention to what Elias was saying.
When they were only a thousand meters from the ground, Elias pulled the ripcord for their parachute.
The speed of their descent gradually slowed, and the world around them suddenly grew quiet. Even the wind became a gentle whisper.
Victoria opened her eyes and looked down.
The ground below unfolded like a painted scroll. The full, sprawling vista of the prosperous Imperial Capital slowly came into view, shifting from a blur into sharp focus.
After what felt like an eternity in the air, the two of them landed smoothly on a grassy field not far from where the helicopter had taken off.
The ground crew was already waiting. The moment they saw them, they rushed forward to assist, helping unbuckle the harnesses and equipment.
When her feet were finally planted firmly on the ground, Victoria’s heart, which had been lodged in her throat, finally settled. But before she could even take a breath of relief, a wave of dizziness hit her, and she staggered violently.
Elias’s cold eyes tightened, and he reached out to steady her.
But Victoria instinctively pulled away, stabilizing her swaying body on her own.
Elias’s brow furrowed slightly. “Victoria—”
Before he could finish, another wave of nausea washed over Victoria. She immediately pressed one hand to her abdomen and the other to her chest, crouching down and dry-heaving.
“Ugh—”
Worried about Grady’s scheduled email, Victoria had eaten very little for lunch, and it had all long since been digested. After several retching fits, all she brought up was a bit of bitter acid, and her throat burned.
It took a long moment for her to recover, the corners of her eyes flushed red.
Elias glanced at her pale face, his gaze darkening. “Hawk, get a doctor!” he ordered.
Without another word, he swept Victoria into his arms.
The sudden feeling of weightlessness made Victoria reflexively wrap her arms around Elias’s neck.
By the time she came to her senses, Elias was already striding off the grassy field and toward the skydiving center’s indoor lounge.
The doctor arrived quickly, his signature white coat instantly catching Victoria’s eye.
A flash of white went through her mind. The thoughts that had been muddled by the high-altitude jump suddenly cleared, and she shot to her feet, taking two steps back.
“I don’t need to see a doctor.”
Victoria knew that besides Elias, no one here could defy his wishes, and she was no exception.
