Just as the doctor had said, he only performed a routine check-up on Victoria.
But with Elias watching over them, the doctor was exceptionally thorough.
Twenty minutes later, the examination was complete. Before the doctor could even speak, Elias asked in a low voice, “How is she?”
At the sound of Elias’s voice, Victoria’s hands, resting on her lap, tightened slightly. Her heart began to race, threatening to leap into her throat.
While the doctor was examining her, her mind had been spinning, trying to figure out how she could convince Elias to let her keep the child if the secret was revealed.
But try as she might, she came up with nothing.
The doctor spoke respectfully. “Mr. Shawn, Miss Sanger is fine. The sudden vomiting was likely a reaction to the landing, a result of the shock. However…”
The moment the word “however” left his lips, the doctor could feel both of their gazes lock onto him. The pressure was immense, and a cold sweat broke out on his back. He swallowed hard before continuing.
“However, Miss Sanger seems a bit run down and her system is weak. If possible, I’d suggest she focus on a more nutrient-rich diet to build up her strength.”
Hearing this, Elias turned to look at Victoria, his brow slightly furrowed.
The color had drained from her face, and her features held a cool, distant air. She did seem to have lost more weight.
Victoria’s attention was entirely on the doctor’s words, completely oblivious to Elias’s scrutiny.
When she heard the diagnosis, she let out a silent sigh of relief, and her clenched fists slowly relaxed.
Shortly after, Hawk led the doctor away.
Elias’s expression was unreadable. He stood in place for a few seconds before striding forward.
Victoria kept her eyes lowered. She sensed a shadow fall over her, and before she could look up, the man’s deep voice reached her ears.
“I’ll take you home.”
“No—”
Victoria’s refusal was reflexive, but Elias clearly had no intention of giving her a choice. After dropping that cold statement, he turned and strode out of the skydiving center.
Victoria pressed her lips together. She desperately wanted to stand her ground, pretend she hadn’t heard him, and just call a car to leave.
Another silent journey.
Hawk sat in the driver’s seat, his eyes instinctively drifting to the rear view mirror to observe the two in the back.
In the back seat, Victoria was subconsciously shielding her abdomen, as if silently soothing the baby inside. She leaned against the car door, her eyes closed, still shaken from the day's events.
Elias, meanwhile, had his long legs crossed, a tablet resting on his lap. His slender, well-defined fingers tapped the screen from time to time as he handled business matters.
There was nothing physically between them, yet it felt as if an uncrossable chasm separated them.
Hawk knew just how much effort Elias had put into this surprise for Victoria. He had spent a fortune to book the entire skydiving facility and, to ensure her safety, had braved the cold night winds to test the jump procedures himself, personally overseeing every detail.
It was no exaggeration to say that Elias hadn't been this meticulous even on the day he officially took over The Shawn Group.
Hawk had thought that after this, Mr. Shawn and Miss Sanger would reconcile, or at the very least, their relationship would warm up, with remarriage just around the corner.
So what was with this oppressive atmosphere?
Why did it feel like not only were there no signs of reconciliation, but things were actually getting worse?
