The Maybach drove along the asphalt road for nearly forty minutes before finally coming to a stop.
Hawk glanced at the rearview mirror, thought for a moment, and announced, “Mr. Shawn, Miss Sanger, we’ve arrived.”
Victoria had been drifting in and out of sleep the entire way. Hearing Hawk’s voice, she opened her eyes and looked out the window. The main entrance of the Willow Creek Estates apartment building came into view.
She sat up straight and turned her head to look at Elias.
As if he hadn't noticed, Elias was still focused on the documents on his tablet.
A brief silence fell over the car.
After a moment of hesitation, she was the one to break the heavy quiet. “I have something to do tomorrow morning. As for the other two things…”
“Something to do? What is it?”
Elias’s gaze shifted from the tablet to Victoria’s face. His tone was laced with skepticism, as if questioning what important business an unemployed person like her could possibly have.
Victoria was already simmering with frustration from being repeatedly forced into corners by Elias. Hearing the accusatory tone in his voice, she found it hard to contain her anger. “Mr. Shawn,” she said, her words sharp, “that’s my private business. We have a transactional relationship right now. I don’t need to report my personal schedule to you.”
Elias’s long, narrow eyes half-closed, a cold, sharp glint flashing within them.
The temperature inside the car plummeted.
Victoria could clearly feel the oppressive aura radiating from Elias, making it difficult to breathe.
With Grady still in a coma and Garnett’s surgery approaching, she knew this wasn't the time to test Elias’s patience. After all, the man was a lunatic at his core, and angering him would lead to nothing good.
But the feeling of being constantly trapped under his control was about to break her.
Victoria’s fingers tightened on the door handle. She looked him straight in the eye, refusing to show the slightest hint of fear.
As expected, a vein throbbed at Elias’s temple. His patience was wearing thin. His lips tightened, and his eyes grew deeper, as if containing a storm of rage that could erupt at any moment.
After a long while, Elias’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He ground out a single word through gritted teeth.
“Get out!”
He was afraid that if she stayed a moment longer, he would lose what little control he had left.
Hearing that word was like being granted amnesty. Without a moment's hesitation, Victoria pushed the door open, got out swiftly, and hurried toward her apartment building.
The car door slammed shut with a thud.
Elias’s chest heaved. He closed his eyes for a long time, finally managing to suppress the turbulent emotions inside him.
“Cancel everything.”

The next day, Victoria drove to the detention center.
Abbey’s defense lawyer was already waiting outside. When he saw her, he gave her a few brief instructions and then smoothly led her into the facility’s meeting room.
The lawyer glanced at his watch. “Miss Sanger, I’m going to make a phone call. I’ll be back in about fifteen minutes.”
During detention, a suspect’s meeting with their lawyer could not exceed half an hour.
Fifteen minutes was the absolute maximum private time the lawyer could secure for them to talk alone.
Victoria understood this and thanked him.
The lawyer gave a polite smile and left the room.
Victoria hadn't been sitting for long when the door to the meeting room opened again, accompanied by the sound of heavy footsteps.
She turned her head, and the moment she saw the person’s face, she froze.
