"Miss Sanger, the photos from your recent session have been developed. I haven't had a chance to give them to you yet."

Victoria paused, taking the envelope. The moment her fingers touched it, her heart tightened inexplicably. She carefully opened it.

Inside were the photos she had taken with Garnett and Elias.

The one on top was a formal portrait of Garnett. He was dressed in a crisp suit, his hair perfectly combed, a gentle smile on his lips, and his eyes full of the same loving kindness she saw every time she came home.

Victoria's fingertips gently caressed her father's face on the photograph. A sob caught in her throat, and her chest felt tight and achy, as if blocked by something solid.

She took a deep breath and, with trembling hands, flipped to the next two photos.

One was the couple's portrait of her and Elias, the very one she had permanently deleted from the tablet. The other was a family photo of the three of them.

In the edited photo, both she and Elias had faint smiles, looking slightly sweeter than they had in the original shot, as if they were a loving couple and a close-knit family in some other, parallel world.

Victoria clutched the photos to her chest as if they were her last treasure.

The tears she'd been holding back finally fell, tracing paths down her cheeks and landing on the photo, blurring a small spot. She bit her lip hard, letting the tears flow in silence, her shoulders trembling with suppressed sobs.

Hawk watched her for a moment before quietly backing out of the room and gently closing the door, leaving Victoria to her grief.

Some pain can only be processed alone.

The room filled with the sound of Victoria's stifled weeping.

She curled up on the hospital bed, hugging the photos like a lost child who had finally found a flicker of warmth in the darkness.

She didn't know how long she cried. Eventually, her eyelids grew heavy, and exhaustion swept over her. Still clutching the photos, she drifted into a deep sleep.
