Garnett frowned. "What makes you think that?"
Victoria considered her words carefully, selectively omitting certain details as she recounted her private meeting with Harry.
In truth, she had been thinking about it constantly during her two days in the hospital.
When the project collapsed two years ago, Garnett, as the lead person in charge, had made plenty of enemies who wished him ill. But their grievances with the Sanger family were out in the open. If they wanted Garnett dead, they wouldn't need to hide in the shadows.
Furthermore, when she had threatened Harry, he had immediately gone back on his word. This suggested that whoever was backing him had made a promise powerful enough to make him unafraid of retaliation from the Sanger family. And he believed it implicitly. That meant this person's identity was far from simple.
"So you think this person doesn't have a grudge against our family, but is simply using this as a pretext to achieve another goal? Like..."
"Silencing a witness," Victoria finished his sentence.
Garnett's expression immediately grew grave, but then he shook his head in denial. "Impossible. I've never conspired with anyone. There's no reason for me to be silenced."
"It doesn't have to be a conspiracy."
Meeting Garnett's confused gaze, Victoria asked, "Dad, when you were at The Sanger Group, countless documents were filtered and sent to you by your subordinates every day. Did you read every single one carefully before signing?"
"Of course not. If I had to review every single document, it would be too time-consum—" Garnett stopped mid-sentence, the realization dawning on him. "You're saying this person wants me dead because something he wanted to hide happened to pass through my hands?"
Victoria didn't speak, but her silence was an answer.
"Dad, do you have any suspects in mind?" Victoria asked after a long pause.
Garnett frowned in thought, but even by the time Victoria had to get up to leave, he couldn't think of anything suspicious. "Victoria, no matter who this person is, I don't want you to investigate any further."
"But if we don't find him, what if next time..."
"Victoria, promise me."
Victoria's lips tightened. She knew Garnett was only saying this because he was worried she would be in danger. "Okay."
Only then did Garnett relax, watching as Victoria left.
Tobias was waiting outside. When he saw Victoria emerge, he walked up to her, concerned. "Victoria, how is Mr. Sanger doing?"
"He's doing well."
"That's good. You can rest easy now. I heard they just brought in a team of cardiac specialists for Building Three. With them on the case, as long as Mr. Sanger cooperates with the treatment, his condition will definitely be brought under control."
