Laurel picked up the emerald pendant. Before she could speak, one of the society ladies beside her exclaimed, "The color and clarity of this emerald are so smooth and translucent. It must have been expensive, right?"

Genevieve placed the box down. "No price is too high for a gift for Mrs. Shawn."

Laurel herself couldn't put the pendant down.

"Gen, you're so thoughtful. I can't believe you remembered me even after being abroad for two years."

"Mrs. Shawn, you were always so kind to me. How could I ever forget?" Genevieve smiled sweetly and gently. Suddenly, her expression changed. She covered her mouth, bent over, and looked as if she was about to be sick.

Laurel was startled by Genevieve's sudden retching and quickly called for a maid to fetch a doctor.

Genevieve composed herself, her eyes slightly moist. "I'm fine, Mrs. Shawn. Please don't worry."

Laurel frowned, her face full of concern. "How could you suddenly feel sick like this? Did you eat something bad today?"

"I..." Genevieve glanced at the other ladies around Laurel, hesitating.

Laurel caught her look and understood immediately. She said to the others, "Why don't you all step out for a moment?"

The ladies exchanged glances before leaving the room.

"Gen, they're all gone. You can tell me now." Laurel looked at her, and as a thought occurred to her, her gaze fell to Genevieve's abdomen. "Tell me, are you pregnant?"

Genevieve pressed her lips together and nodded.

Laurel shot up from her seat. "Then tell me the truth. Who is the father? Is it Elias?"

"The baby..." Genevieve started to say, but her eyes suddenly reddened. She stood up and knelt down. "Mrs. Shawn, I'm so sorry!"

Laurel quickly helped her up. "Silly girl, I haven't said anything yet! Why are you kneeling?"

"I was just afraid you'd be angry."

"So the baby really is Elias's?"

Genevieve didn't answer, simply placing a hand over her stomach.

Laurel took this as a silent confirmation. Her eyes, now fixed on Genevieve's belly, filled with excitement. She reached out and placed her hand on it. "How many months?"
