"What? Not Elias's?!"
Cerys almost thought she had misheard, but on second thought, the explanation made sense.
In wealthy circles, using a child to secure one's position was a common and effective strategy.
Genevieve was desperate to become Mrs. Shawn. If she were carrying Elias's child, even if Old Mr. Shawn disapproved, Elias couldn't ignore the baby once it was born. Her marriage into the Shawn family would be a matter of time.
Therefore, Genevieve had no reason to discard such a winning hand and take the risk of framing Victoria.
Unless the child wasn't a trump card, but a liability.
"So, do you think Elias knows the baby wasn't his?" Cerys asked.
Victoria shook her head. "I don't know," she said softly.
Cerys scoffed. "Whatever. I don't care if he knows or not! It's better if he doesn't. Let him get a taste of being cheated on! It serves him right for being so blind, falling for trash like Genevieve. He deserves to be some other man's stand-in father!"
"But still, for Genevieve to go to such lengths to frame you this time, she definitely won't give up easily if she doesn't get what she wants." Cerys couldn't help but worry. "With no surveillance footage and no witnesses, it's going to be hard to prove your innocence..."
A witness...
A thought suddenly struck Victoria. She turned to Cerys. "Cerys, help me find someone."
Cerys looked at her, confused, as their eyes met.
-
After his call, Elias stood by the railing of the suspended walkway, looking down at the central garden below. His eyes were cold and deep, his thoughts unreadable.
Someone walked up beside him and offered him a cigarette.
Elias glanced at it, took it, but didn't light it. "How is she?"
"She's awake and seems okay. Cerys is with her." With a soft click, a flame shot out from a lighter. Lucian lit his own cigarette and took a drag.
He thought about the texts Cerys had sent him. Eight out of ten were curses aimed at Elias and Genevieve. The other two were curses aimed at him.
The reason was simple: he was Elias's friend.
Cerys was furious. She didn't care that he was her own brother. Anyone associated with a scumbag like Elias was, in her eyes, no good.
"If you're so worried, why don't you go up and see for yourself?" Lucian asked.
Elias's brow twitched almost imperceptibly. The image of Victoria's resolute eyes as she told him they were even flashed in his mind. He felt a lump in his throat, a suffocating, frustrating feeling.
He almost wished he could tear those almond eyes out.
