Victoria had just finished looking at the last apartment with Cerys and was about to sign the lease when she got the call from Laurel demanding she return to Shawn Manor immediately.
The theme for the Euro-American Architectural Design Awards had just been announced.
She had only half a month to complete her design draft.
And during this time, she had thought things through very clearly. Since she had decided to make a clean break, she had to move out of The Imperial Crest Estates as soon as possible and cut all ties with anything related to Elias.
"I had a feeling something was up when I woke up this morning. My eye was twitching like crazy. Laurel calling you at a time like this can't be good," Cerys said. "Victoria, why don't I go with you?"
Victoria put her phone away. "No, you stay here and sign the contract with the landlord for me. Let me borrow your car."
Cerys was still worried and was about to say more, but she paused when she heard Victoria ask to borrow her car. "What do you need the car for? Whenever you went to Shawn Manor before, you always—"
Cerys stopped mid-sentence, a knowing, sly look appearing in her eyes as she seemed to realize something. She pressed the car keys into Victoria's hand. "Victoria, I'll be waiting for your good news!"
Victoria took the keys, and they shared a look of mutual understanding before she turned and left.
...
Shawn Manor.
Genevieve handed Laurel a glass of warm water, comforting her softly. "Mrs. Shawn, please calm down. Perhaps there's some kind of misunderstanding. You..."
"What misunderstanding could there be? You saw the medical report. It's written in black and white. Can that be faked?"
At that moment, Victoria walked into the living room.
Laurel's final words, "Can that be faked?" hit her ears.
Her steps faltered for a moment, but before she could process the meaning of Laurel's words, Genevieve's gentle voice reached her.
"Victoria, you're here!"
Victoria's gaze swept coolly over Genevieve before finally settling on Laurel's displeased face. "Mom."
Laurel shot her a fierce glare and threw the prepared envelope at her. "Sign this, and from this day on, you don't have to call me 'Mom'!"
The envelope wasn't sealed, and its contents scattered as it flew through the air.
The words 'Divorce Agreement' were starkly visible.
Victoria bent down to pick it up. A single glance was enough to see one of the clauses in the agreement: "The marriage is unsustainable due to the wife's moral failings."
Moral failings...What a joke!
It was Elias who had cheated, who had been unfaithful to their marriage. She had endured and compromised, yet in the end, it was her fault?
A chill spread through Victoria's heart.
"Does Grandpa know about this agreement?"
