The Abandoned Wife Dumped Him First (Victoria and Elias) novel Chapter 93

Laurel eyed the maid suspiciously. "You're the one who has something to report? Go on, what is it?"

"Lady Laurel, actually... on the night of your birthday party, Miss Vale fell from the second floor on her own—"

"You're lying!" Genevieve's hands tightened as she cut the maid off sharply.

"I... I'm not." The maid nervously pulled out an envelope. Her hands were visibly trembling. "Th-this is the twenty thousand dollars you gave me. You told me to find a way to get Mrs. Shawn to the second-floor changing room and to wait downstairs to keep anyone from coming near. Not long after, you and Mrs. Shawn started arguing, and... and then you..."

The maid lowered her head, not continuing, but her meaning was clear.

The butler immediately took the envelope to Laurel.

She opened it and found two neat stacks of hundred-dollar bills inside, still wrapped in the white paper bands from the bank.

Laurel froze. The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Every word the maid had just spoken pointed to one thing: from the very beginning, Genevieve had orchestrated the whole thing, framing Victoria to make everyone believe that Victoria's cruelty had caused her miscarriage.

Seeing Laurel's silence, Genevieve's panic grew. Her eyes filled with tears as she pleaded, "Mrs. Shawn, you have to believe me. Why would I intentionally fall and cause my own miscarriage? If I could, I would trade my life for that child to be born safely. Besides, I've never even met this person, how could I possibly have given her money..."

Laurel was already wavering. Hearing Genevieve's words and recalling how she had spent nearly every day in the hospital in tears, the last of her suspicion vanished.

Besides, this maid hadn't appeared sooner. Why show up so many days later to say all this? And looking at Victoria's calm and composed demeanor, it was obvious something was fishy!

"Gen, don't worry, of course I believe you!" Laurel patted Genevieve's hand comfortingly, then turned to the maid, her face hardening. "Tell me! Did Victoria give you this twenty thousand dollars? Tell me the truth, and I might let you off easy!"

With that, Laurel's sharp gaze fell on Victoria.

Victoria's eyes flashed with irony.

She knew that even without the maid's answer, Laurel had already concluded that this was all a drama she had orchestrated.

And of course, she couldn't deny it entirely.

She had brought the maid here, and she had asked her to tell what she knew about that night.

What Cerys said on the day she'd collapsed in the hospital had been a timely reminder. If she could figure out that the maid was the key to proving her innocence, Genevieve couldn't possibly be unaware. To securely pin the 'murderer' label on her, the first thing Genevieve would do upon waking up would be to silence this maid.

So, she had asked Cerys to use her connections to find the maid first and hide her away.
