The nurse hesitated for a second. “Since the new chief doctor just came back from overseas, a lot of people are coming here just for him. If you transfer your file now, he’ll make your appointments a priority. That way, you won’t have trouble getting in for your next check-up.”
Cabinda Hospital was one of the top hospitals in the country. Getting an appointment with any doctor there was like winning the lottery.
The first time Catherine went to the OB-GYN, she had to buy her appointment from a scalper. Things only got easier after she was officially registered and could book through the hospital system.
“Alright, please help me transfer my file. Just let me know in advance when it’s happening.”
“If you’re free tomorrow, you could come then. The doctor set aside time specifically in the morning to handle transfers.”
Tomorrow was Wednesday. Catherine didn’t have any morning meetings, and her project with Golden Horizon Enterprises was running smoothly. She could take a half-day off.
She agreed and decided to talk to Lance before leaving work to ask for time off.
She went upstairs and knocked on his office door.
A low voice answered from inside. “Come in.”
Catherine opened the door and found Lance by the window, deep in a phone call. The sleeves of his white shirt were rolled up, one hand in his pocket, blue veins tracing the lean lines of his forearm.
He glanced over his shoulder and gave her a look that said, wait a minute.
Catherine waited in the middle of his office.
“Since you’re back, we have to meet up. I’ll put something together tomorrow night, give you a proper welcome.”
“I’ll stop by your office in the morning, and we’ll catch up again in the evening.”
Lance returned to his desk and checked his digital schedule.
He was free tomorrow morning. No meetings.
He ended the call and looked over at Catherine. “What’s up?”
“Lance, I need to take care of something tomorrow morning. I’d like to take a half-day off.”
The moment she finished, she could feel the air between them cool a few degrees.
Lance’s lips parted, like he wanted to say something.
He almost asked if she was going to see Lewis.
But the words stuck in his throat, sharp and stubborn, and he just couldn’t say them.
After a long pause, he managed, “Alright. Noted.”
