Catherine’s breath hitched as she tried to explain, “I just thought your wedding plans with Adelina were more important.”
She was Lance’s secretary, and it was her job to rearrange his schedule when needed. Normally, he didn’t care about the details. This time, though, he was different.
“Change it back,” Lance said, cutting her off. “Stick to the original plan.” His voice was steady, but the tension in the room was impossible to ignore.
“Understood,” Catherine replied quietly.
She pulled out her phone and, right in front of him, updated the calendar. The dinner with the Green family would now happen next week instead. After that, she went back to her desk and changed the printed schedule, making sure to hand Lance the new version herself.
Not long after, Belinda called. She unleashed a storm of complaints, her voice sharp and relentless. Catherine didn’t say a word until Belinda finally ran out of steam.
“The schedule was Lance’s decision, not mine,” Catherine said calmly. “You can blame me if it makes you feel better. I know I’m just the secretary here. But I want to make one thing clear: I don’t have any hidden motives toward Lance, no matter what you think.”
She spoke plainly, every word measured. Belinda seemed even more annoyed, but she couldn’t come up with a comeback.
“Even when we were married, I never crossed any lines with Lance. Now that we’re divorced, there’s even less reason for you to worry. I hope you’ll keep that in mind from now on.”
Catherine ended the call.
She tossed her phone aside and tried to focus on work, but when she looked up, she realized the office door was open. Lance was leaning against the frame, eyes sharp and unblinking. It felt like he could see right through her.
Catherine’s gaze was steady, too. The things she’d just said to Belinda echoed in the room. They weren’t meant for Lance, but somehow, they landed with him anyway. He didn’t seem hurt, just uncomfortable in a way that settled deep.
She met his eyes for a moment, then looked down and busied herself with her tasks. Still, she could feel him watching her.
After a while, his attention finally shifted and he went back to his own office. Catherine felt her body relax a little. Lance hadn’t said another word, but it was obvious from the way he acted that he was still upset.
