Catherine still remembered that accident. It was during a messy business war.
The James family’s only heir had been targeted, which was a massive scandal, so the story disappeared from the news almost as soon as it broke.
While she replayed the details in her mind, Gavin couldn’t stop staring at her. He was searching for any reaction, any crack in her calm, but her face gave away nothing.
“Are you done?” Catherine uncrossed her legs, ready to get rid of him at any second.
“No, come on, think about it,” Gavin said, a little desperate now. “Adelina saved Lance’s life. What if Lance is marrying her just to repay her?”
Catherine blinked, honestly surprised. She hadn’t thought about it that way before.
But really, there were plenty of ways to say thank you. Lance didn’t need to give up his whole life to someone out of gratitude.
“Can you at least react?” Gavin sighed when she just sat there, unmoved.
Catherine finally took a slow breath. “You might be right. Maybe Lance is marrying her to repay a debt. Good analysis, Gavin.”
Her eyes stayed completely calm, her voice flat and unbothered. She might as well have been reading off a grocery list. Gavin looked like he might actually collapse from frustration.
“You don’t believe me, do you?” He pulled out his phone and started dialing. “I want a full report on Adelina’s two years overseas. Everything. Don’t leave anything out.”
He needed to prove it to her, show her that there was more going on with Lance and Adelina.
Catherine frowned just a little. “Gavin, this really isn’t necessary.”
“Just wait. I’ll tell you as soon as I find something.”
Not waiting for her to show him out, Gavin waved and left. He’d be back, though, and next time he’d have answers.
Catherine was too busy to care. She had no time for this drama. But late at night, when everything was quiet, Gavin’s words would creep back into her mind.
That old, buried feeling for Lance she thought she’d killed long ago started to stir. For just a second, she wavered. Then she shoved the thought away, tearing it out before it could take root.
