The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 229

Apex. The hospital.

“Lance, why are we even here?” Adelina sat rigid in the car, her fingers twisted in the fabric of her dress, every muscle in her body tense.

Lance stood just outside, the car door wide open, a cigarette smoldering between his fingers. He waited calmly, watching her.

“I heard there’s a specialist here. He’s famous for handling the tough cases.”

The second they pulled up to the hospital, Adelina’s complexion turned ghostly. Now, sitting there, she looked like all the color had been drained from her.

“I’m not going in,” she said, her voice shaking.

Lance took a slow drag, letting the smoke curl around his face. His eyes gave nothing away.

“We’re already at the worst it could get. Let’s just see what the doctor has to say.”

His tone didn’t invite an argument. There was no point in trying to refuse.

Adelina’s hands were balled so tight, her nails left little crescents in her palms.

“Lance…”

“Come on. I’ll go with you.” He flicked the cigarette away, his words somewhere between gentle and commanding.

She knew she couldn’t win. Her breath caught as she stared at him, searching his face, but finally she slipped out of the car.

As soon as she was clear, Lance closed the door. But before he could say another word, Adelina broke into a run, darting across the street.

He frowned, ready to follow, but she was already climbing into a taxi. In seconds, she was gone.

An hour later, at the hotel.

Adelina had locked herself in her room and wouldn’t come out, no matter what.

“I want to go home!” Her voice was muffled but fierce through the door.

Lance sat on the couch, a magazine in his hands. He looked so casual, legs crossed, completely at ease. Still, there was a quiet authority about him, like he was always in control.

“No check-up, no going home.”

Immediately, Adelina fell silent. The whole suite was so quiet you could hear her sniffling stop.

Lance flipped through the magazine, sometimes glancing at the business alerts popping up on his phone, waiting her out.
