The call dropped.
Apex was hotter than back home. The air was thick and heavy, and after that phone call, Adelina felt like she was boiling from the inside out. Irritation buzzed under her skin.
The only thing that made her feel a little better was seeing news about Catherine and Gavin finally go public. Now the Main family would have to notice Catherine. That whole “use a child to seal the deal” plan of hers was definitely going down in flames.

Catherine never saw this kind of news coming.
Gavin messaged her right away. Damn it, someone’s trying to screw me over. If I find out who’s behind this, they’re done for.
SilverLeaf Industries teaming up with Golden Horizon Enterprises was bad news for everyone else in the business world. When two giants joined forces, all the other companies could do was shiver and hope for leftovers.
But whoever tried to wreck this partnership with such a cheap move clearly wasn’t thinking straight. It would never actually hurt SilverLeaf or Golden Horizon, and whoever did it was about to get hit back hard.
Catherine ran through every possible suspect in her mind, but still couldn’t figure out who’d be that reckless. Right now, though, she had bigger problems.
Three hours after the story broke, the Main family made their move.
The rumor mill was saying Gavin and Catherine had been tangled up for ages, all because of work. They even dug up so-called proof that Catherine kept trying to quit, painting her as someone desperate to marry into money. The story claimed Gavin wouldn't let her go because he hadn’t convinced his family to accept her yet.
If Catherine wasn’t the one in the middle of all this, she’d almost believe it herself. It sounded so convincing.
Of course Leilani believed the gossip and came to see her. That was no surprise.
“So, how much is it going to take for you to leave my son?” Leilani didn’t even bother to warm up first.
Catherine blinked. She shouldn’t have been surprised. All rich moms seemed to have the same playbook.
