The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 237

“Resigning to take responsibility basically means the rumors are true. You and Gavin… there really is something going on, isn’t there?”

Lance tapped his fingers on the desk, each tap steady and heavy, echoing in the silent room. His eyes locked onto Catherine’s, dark and impossible to read.

When she stayed quiet, he spoke again. “If you leave SilverLeaf Industries, the Main Family won’t let you off so easily either.”

Catherine remembered the last time Leilani had tossed a check at her, basically trying to buy her silence. The message couldn’t have been clearer. But back then, with SilverLeaf Industries behind her, Leilani didn’t dare to go too far. No one really knew what Lance was thinking either, so everyone held back.

Catherine could already see the mess waiting for her if she walked away from SilverLeaf Industries. But if she left Cabinda… none of that would matter anymore. It wasn’t like she had any deep grudge with these people. Once she was out of their sight, who would even bother chasing after her?

“Lance, I’ve already made up my mind.”

A shadow flickered across Lance’s face, darkening his usually composed features. He pressed his tongue to the inside of his cheek, his jaw set tight, every line of his face sharp and clear.

“You’re suspended, pending investigation. It’ll be at least a week, maybe up to a month. If things get worse, the company will have to fire you.”

Catherine listened in silence, then nodded. She accepted it, no questions asked. By the time things reached suspension, nobody ever made it back. The whole process was just for show, pretending the company had a heart.

After she left Lance’s office, she packed up her things without a fuss and headed out. Michelle walked her to the door.

“I never thought it’d end up like this,” Michelle said quietly. “Lewis feels awful. He thinks if it hadn’t been for him, you wouldn’t be dealing with all these rumors about cheating.”

Whether anything had actually happened between Catherine and Gavin didn’t matter now. The real issue was everyone thought she was ‘with’ Lewis. The gossip was everywhere, relentless, threatening to swallow her whole.

“It doesn’t matter what you do. People who want to believe the worst will always find something to talk about,” Catherine said softly.

Not everyone was against her though. There were a few who stayed out of the drama, refusing to buy into the rumors.
