There was a whole pile of cigarette butts at his feet, proof he’d been waiting for quite a while.
“Lance only suspended you just now? Seems like he was trying to cover for you in front of the board.”
That day, it was Aaron who went with Lance to the board meeting.
Catherine had no idea how much pressure Lance was under. Still, she thought, He doesn’t need to protect me. There’s no reason he would.
“No reason?” Gavin stubbed out his cigarette. Something seemed to cross his mind, and he actually let out a laugh, a little sharp around the edges. “Guess who’s really behind all this.”
Behind all this?
Catherine frowned. “Wasn’t it meant for SilverLeaf Industries and Golden Horizon Enterprises?”
Gavin muttered a curse. “No one in the business world would dare pull a stunt like this unless they were crazy.”
Catherine had seen plenty of power plays after working with Lance for years. Moves like this didn’t make sense—unless the person behind it had nothing left to lose. Still, it never occurred to her that this was about her and Gavin, not the companies.
About her...
“Adelina?”
Gavin’s eyes lit up, a grin tugging at his mouth. “Catherine, you’re too sharp.”
So sharp, it made him uneasy, like she could slip away, baby and all, right under Lance’s nose.
Catherine was surprised for a second, then let out a laugh, exasperated. So Adelina did all this to find out if her baby was Gavin’s? And in the end, it was Lance who got burned.
“This time, I got dragged into it because of you,” Gavin said, trying to make her owe him something.
Catherine’s smile faded. “Then we’re even.”
Gavin looked annoyed. “I don’t owe you, do I?”
