“You’re the one Lance trusts most. If he ever finds out what you did, he’ll be the first to kick you when you’re down, and your whole career will go up in smoke. The Lane family won’t let it slide, either. They’ll chase you for it, nonstop…”
Adelina laid out every disaster she could bring down on Harrell’s head. Each one was a nightmare he couldn’t afford.
Sunlight poured over Harrell, but the coldness around him was enough to make anyone shiver.
There was a sharp crack.
No one knew how long it had been, but the pen in Harrell’s hand had snapped in two.
His face looked normal, but the tension in the air was so thick it was almost suffocating.
“Adelina, you’d better pray you never end up in my hands.”
He spoke through clenched teeth, every word biting and cold, and his eyes turned dangerously sharp.
She’d won. Adelina could feel her heart pounding so hard it almost leaped into her throat. Anyone who knew Harrell knew he was a reckless gambler. If you dared to play against him, you’d better be ready for payback if you lost.
“Tomorrow is your show,” Adelina said, forcing herself to sound calm despite her nerves. She finished what she had to say, then turned and walked out.
Harrell just stared after her, his gaze icy and unforgiving.
...
“Adelina knows Harrell, too?”
In the car, Lorinda kept thinking about how Adelina had just pushed open the office door and walked right in on Harrell.
Catherine gave a small nod. “Maybe. It’s possible.”
Lance and Adelina had grown up together. They shared a bunch of mutual friends. It really wasn’t that weird.
“All these complicated connections,” Lorinda said, half laughing, half nervous. “Your ancestors must be working overtime to give you all the luck.”
Cabinda was a big city, but in their circle, it sometimes felt tiny. They saw the same people all the time, especially at work.
