Amanda barged in so suddenly that both Catherine and Patty jumped.
They turned to find Amanda already standing right in front of them.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
Her voice sounded cold and sharp, like Catherine had just done something unforgivable.
“I’m not sure yet.” Catherine gently let go of Patty’s hand, stood up, straightened her clothes, and headed for the door.
Amanda was in no shape to have this conversation in front of Patty. Catherine stepped out, and Amanda followed her immediately.
“Not sure? That just means you have no plan at all. Where do you think you’re going looking like that, pregnant and all? I haven’t finished talking to you about this. While you’re still early on and no one can really tell, you should just take care of it now. It’ll be easier before the baby gets much bigger…”
Catherine stopped in her tracks.
She turned and cut Amanda off. “This is a child, a real life. How can you say something so cruel?”
“I’m just looking out for you!” Amanda shot back, her voice rising.
“Wow, thanks a lot,” Catherine said, her tone cool. “But maybe you should save all that ‘goodness’ for the kids here.”
“You…”
“We’re not part of the orphanage anymore.”
Their arguing drew Lorinda out from the kitchen. She stepped right between Catherine and Amanda, arms crossed as she stared Amanda down.
“We’ve paid back everything we owed this place, and then some. We only keep helping because we care about these kids, because we actually have hearts. So stop trying to guilt us into things. If you keep it up, we’ll cut you off for good and not give a cent more.”
Lorinda sounded tough, but deep down, she knew she could never turn her back completely. She and Catherine had grown up in this place. They’d survived so much, and they couldn’t let the next group of kids go through the same.
Amanda didn’t want to risk pushing them anymore. She quickly softened. “Whatever you want to do is up to you. I’m not trying to control your life. I’m just giving advice because I’ve been through it.”
“You might have experience, but you’re not family. Maybe keep your advice to yourself.”
