“Sir, are you the patient’s family?”
After a burst of background noise, the nurse’s voice suddenly became clear. “The patient fainted while getting an IV. Can you come to the hospital?”
Family?
Lance knew right away the patient was Catherine, but the word family didn’t fit him at all.
He was about to say no, but then he remembered Catherine was on her own in this world.
“Which hospital?” He lowered his eyes, staring at the spiky cactus sitting on Catherine’s desk.
“The Cabinda Hospital.”
The nurse continued, her tone more urgent. “Please come as soon as possible. The patient’s condition is complicated, and we need to discuss it with you.”
Complicated. Lance caught onto that word, his mind racing. He told her he’d come, then hung up.
“Aaron, get the car. We’re going to The Cabinda Hospital.”
Lance turned, walked into his office, grabbed his jacket, and came back out.
“Lance, you’ve still got a ton of work to deal with!” Aaron sounded worried. “You have an overseas meeting this afternoon!”
Lance didn’t slow down. He stopped in front of the elevator and checked his watch.
“Move the meeting to tonight.”
Aaron could only nod. “Yes, sir.”
The Maybach rolled out of the SilverLeaf Industries parking garage and headed straight to The Cabinda Hospital.
***
By the time Catherine arrived at the hospital in a cab, her fever was already over 102.
She’d caught a nasty virus and her condition was so serious that the doctor put her on an IV right away.
Halfway through the drip, Catherine blacked out.
When she woke up again, she was lying on a single bed in a private hospital room.
