The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 288

“What?”

“Sophia, I’m telling you, Catherine is so over you. If she wasn’t, would she be asking for a divorce and now talking about a job transfer? Lance, what did you do to make her want nothing to do with you?”

Even Sophia could see that Catherine was avoiding him.

“Get to the office, now. If you’re not here soon, you’re losing your bonus for the month.”

Lance didn’t wait for a reply. He hung up.

Sophia stared at her phone. “Wait, what? You told me to take a couple days off…” She grumbled as she ran upstairs, grumbling about Lance under her breath as she changed and rushed out the door toward the office.

Meanwhile, Lance sat back, loosening the top buttons of his shirt. The glow of his dark computer screen reflected the tension in his face. He pressed his tongue against his cheek, those sharp features set in a mix of frustration and deep confusion.

After a long pause, he picked up his phone. “I need Catherine to admit she’s pregnant herself.”

Silence. Then someone on the other end said, “I’m a doctor, not a magician.”

Lance was unmoved. “The sooner, the better.”

The truth was already out there, even if no one had said it. The secret was so thin it would rip at the slightest touch. Catherine’s nerves were strung tight.

After finishing lunch with Sophia, Catherine went back to Lorinda’s place. She had just stepped inside when Lorinda’s voice echoed from the living room.

“Quit whining and get Patty back to school right now!”

Lorinda looked over when she heard the door, then mouthed, “Amanda” to Catherine.

Catherine set her bag down and tiptoed over, sitting quietly next to Lorinda.

“Fine, we’ll take care of the certificate. We’ll get it to you tomorrow morning. You just have the money ready, and we’ll settle up then.”

Whatever Amanda had said seemed to calm Lorinda a bit.

When the call ended, Catherine asked, “What happened?”

“I called her about the money, but she dodged the question. Instead, she said Patty wants to go back to school, but she’s missing a document—a health certificate from the hospital.”
