The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 287

Catherine froze, her breath catching in her throat as her hand shook around her chopsticks. The chopsticks slipped from her fingers, landing on the table with a sharp clatter that seemed to echo in her mind. Her heart skipped, then stumbled, completely thrown off rhythm.

“What… did you just say?”

Sophia pressed her lips with her fingers, realizing she had blurted it out again. “Oh, come on. Grandma and I have known you’re pregnant for a while.”

Catherine stared at her, shocked.

Sophia gave an embarrassed little smile. “And we know the baby’s Gavin’s. Grandma wants to make you her god-granddaughter, you know, to give you some support. That way you’d have the status to marry into the Main Family…”

Catherine’s mind was spinning. The moment she learned she was pregnant, she knew she was just an ordinary woman, no match for the powerful James family. That was why she’d planned to leave Cabinda, to have the baby quietly, out of sight. Not leaving had never been part of her plan, but now it was too late. She’d always known someone would find out eventually. What she never expected was that Fiona and Sophia already knew—and even more shocking, they thought Gavin was the father.

Her thoughts raced, trying to figure out where she’d slipped up.

Sophia saw her face go pale and rushed to reassure her. “Don’t worry. Only Grandma and I know about it. Grandpa doesn’t have a clue. Grandma was worried that if too many people found out, it would get out and cause you trouble.”

“Lance doesn’t know?” Catherine’s voice shook, every word heavy and hard to get out.

Sophia nodded, her answer firm. “Of course not. He and Gavin are sworn enemies. If he ever found out, you’d be in big trouble, wouldn’t you?”

Catherine felt tears prick at her eyes. She was touched by how much Fiona and Sophia cared, and relieved that Lance was still in the dark.

“But why are you applying for a transfer to the branch office?” Sophia was genuinely confused. “Did you tell Gavin?”

Catherine took a shaky breath, steadying herself. “He knows. I have my reasons, and I have a plan. Thank you for everything you and Grandma have done for me. Please tell her I’m sorry too.”

She felt guilty, both for Fiona’s kindness and for Sophia’s trust.

“We get it, really. Don’t make this sound so heavy. If you need anything, you have to let us help,” Sophia said, her voice full of warmth and support.

The meal felt heavy, leaving Catherine with a bitter taste she couldn’t shake.

Sophia noticed her discomfort and guessed it was because she’d revealed Catherine’s pregnancy, making her self-conscious.
