Sophia ran a hand through her hair. “The one person who actually should be in Eldervale isn’t there, but the one who really shouldn’t be is the first to rush over.”
“Who’s supposed to be there?” Fiona slid her reading glasses down her nose and peered at Sophia. “Don’t tell me you want to go?”
“Not me. I’m talking about Gavin,” Sophia replied, sounding annoyed. “You have no idea. Gavin’s been on more blind dates than I can count lately. He’s practically gone through every single young woman in Cabinda.”
If the James family and the Main family weren’t just pretending to get along, she probably would have been forced to go on a date with Gavin herself.
“Can’t you see what’s really going on?” Fiona let out a sigh. “The Main family must have said no to letting Catherine marry in.”
“I swear, I’m going to go find a sack, toss Gavin in it, and knock some sense into him. That guy is just the worst.”
Sophia was fuming. In her mind, a guy like Gavin was so not good enough for Catherine. Without his family’s name, he’d never find a wife.
“Forget it. If Catherine doesn’t want us involved, we should… just respect her choice.” Fiona’s face creased with worry. Every time she thought about Catherine, alone and pregnant so far from home, her heart ached.
“Grandma, something’s off. I just know it.” Sophia glanced up the stairs. “After what happened with the Green family, Mom’s been in a bad mood. I can’t tell if she’s mad at the Greens or at Lance, but she’s definitely upset, and I’ve been getting weird looks from her all week. Honestly, I need to get out of here.”
Fiona nodded. “You should go to Eldervale too. See what Lance is really up to.”
“Will do!”
With Fiona’s support, Sophia wasted no time and booked herself a ticket to Eldervale for the next day.
Before leaving, she stopped by the mall and picked out a couple of new outfits. She wasn’t expecting to literally bump into Gavin, who was out shopping with a younger woman.
To make things even weirder, Sophia and the woman both reached for the same dress.
“Go ahead and try it on,” Gavin said, grabbing the dress before Sophia could. He handed it off to the other woman.
