“What a psycho.”
Sophia watched him walk away so suddenly, completely thrown off. She hadn’t really caught what he said, but shrugged it off and went back to shopping, her mind already on her upcoming trip to Eldervale.

Catherine’s alarm went off at six. She quickly silenced it, dragged herself out of bed, and headed to the bathroom to get ready for the day.
She hadn’t even finished brushing her teeth when the doorbell started ringing. Not just once, but again and again, quick and impatient.
She spat out her toothpaste, wiped her mouth, and rushed to the door, not even bothering to wash her face.
“Breakfast.”
Lorinda stood there, holding a small white plate with a sandwich that looked way too pretty to eat. It was obviously homemade.
“Thanks.” Catherine reached for the plate, but Lorinda pulled it back.
“Go finish getting ready. I’ll bring it in for you.” Lorinda walked right in, her voice filling the whole place. “And while I’m at it, you can tell me what’s really up with Lance.”
Catherine felt her heart skip. She hurried after Lorinda, keeping her voice low. “I’m in a rush. I need to get to work. Can we talk later?”
“What are you rushing for? You don’t leave until seven. I got up early just for this. You’re not getting out of it.” Lorinda set the plate down and dropped into a chair. “You said Lance came to Eldervale to help, but I haven’t seen him help at all. Instead, he’s got you up half the night. He’s a total pain. Such a hassle. He—”
Catherine shot her a desperate look.
At the top of the stairs, Lance appeared, looking half-awake, his eyes still heavy with sleep.
With every word Lorinda said, his eyebrows pulled tighter.
“Mmmph!” Catherine quickly covered Lorinda’s mouth.
“Lance, you’re up.”
Anyone with sense would just play along and pretend they hadn’t heard a thing. And Catherine knew Lance was exactly that kind of person.
