The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 369

Geoffrey was still talking when he sensed something had shifted in the air around him.

He glanced at Lance, and the look on Lance’s face made his heart skip. Lance looked serious, even cold.

“Lance?”

“Geoffrey, I’m leaving.”

Lance didn’t wait for a reply. He turned and walked straight toward his car, not even glancing back. Geoffrey watched him go, frozen in place, not daring to follow or see him off.

At the car, Lance could just make out Catherine through the cracked window. She was curled up inside, half her face hidden by a black knit sweater. Her eyes were nearly closed, long lashes resting softly against her skin.

Lance leaned on the hood, lighting a cigarette. Every now and then, he glanced at Catherine through the window.

She’d lied to him. He just couldn’t figure out why.

The smoke drifted around him, the taste of nicotine sharp in his lungs. Usually, he was the calm, collected type, but right now his thoughts were all tangled up. Maybe he’d been losing control for longer than he realized. Now, everything was unraveling.

Catherine wasn’t sleeping well. The car still smelled faintly of Lance, a deep, woody scent that made her restless. Half awake, she opened her eyes just a sliver.

She saw Lance, leaning against the car, his hands braced on the metal. The streetlight poured over him, casting his black suit in a soft, golden glow.

She pulled off the sweater and slid out of the car. “Lance, is it over?”

The car had gotten stuffy, and a sheen of sweat had gathered on her nose. Her eyes were bright and clear, with a hint of red, making her look even more fragile, almost like a startled rabbit.

“Lewis is with Adolf’s daughter now.”

Lance’s face was hidden in shadow, only his lips moving in the light.

Catherine felt her heart tighten. Her hand gripped the fabric of her dress.

“We actually broke up before I came to Eldervale.”

Lance’s voice was impossible to read. “Is that so.”
