“Let’s get this meeting started.”
Lance sounded perfectly calm, like last night’s argument between them had never even happened. The more collected he acted, the more anxious Catherine became.
She stepped out of the elevator, grabbed her files from her office, and rushed straight to the conference room. This was SilverLeaf Industries’ first project since the new branch opened. It was huge. Lance was here to kick things off, laying down the first plans for the company’s future.
“Lance, there’s a government project coming up at the end of the year. I really think we should get in on it. It’s the perfect chance for SilverLeaf Industries to boost its reputation and get our name out there in Eldervale.” Ivan spoke up first, clearly eager.
He was talking about the same project Geoffrey had mentioned before.
Lance turned to Catherine, cutting straight to her. “What do you think, Catherine?”
He never called her anything but Catherine. He hadn’t changed the habit once.
Caught off guard, Catherine didn’t hesitate. She answered honestly. “I don’t think it’s the right move. Government projects in Eldervale always have their usual partners. We could probably win it if we tried, but we’d end up making enemies. SilverLeaf Industries is still new here. It’s not the best time to make waves.”
Her take was the total opposite of Ivan’s.
Ivan didn’t bother to hide his annoyance, but he didn’t press the issue. He figured Lance would just back Catherine’s opinion. That was how things usually went.
But then Lance surprised everyone.
“When has SilverLeaf Industries ever been afraid to take risks?” His voice was even, but there was no mistaking the shift in direction. “Ivan, you’ve got vision and you get things done. I’m giving the government project to you.”
The whole room went quiet.
This was the same man who’d once backed Catherine so fiercely that he would have fired thousands just to keep her happy. Now, he was shutting her down in front of everyone.
Praising Ivan was just another way of saying Catherine was too cautious, too focused on the present.
Catherine lowered her lashes. Of course she knew Lance never let things go. Her words from last night—she’d hit his pride, and she knew it.
