“What are the odds, neighbor?” Gavin propped his arms on the railing and waved at her. “Guess we keep running into each other.”
Catherine’s eyebrows knitted together. She couldn’t find it in herself to feel happy about living next door to him.
“I just moved in,” Gavin said, full of energy. “Let me treat you to dinner tomorrow. You just come by after work, I’ll handle everything.”
“No thanks. We’re not that close,” Catherine replied, barely slowing her stride as she headed for Lorinda’s place.
Gavin called out, even louder, “How are we not close? We’re both from Cabinda! Out here, that practically makes us family!”
Catherine didn’t even answer. She walked into Lorinda’s house and closed the door behind her with a decisive thud.
Lorinda was sprawled out on the play mat with Jasper, helping him bang away at a toy keyboard. She glanced over at Catherine.
“What’s all that noise outside?”
Catherine sat down next to Jasper. “New neighbor moved in.”
Lorinda let out a little “oh” and gave Catherine a once-over. Noticing that Catherine didn’t seem especially upset, she still couldn’t help but ask, “Lance didn’t do anything to you, did he?”
“Nothing like that. He’s just acting different at work, that’s all.” Catherine kept it vague.
“Let him act however he wants. If he really can’t take it, he’ll fire you. We’ll take the severance and you can rest at home. My livestream’s been going great these days anyway.” Lorinda grinned, wiggling her eyebrows. “I’ll take care of you from now on.”
Catherine laughed. “So I’ll stay home and you’ll go out and conquer the world?”
“Absolutely. As long as we’re happy, that’s what counts!” Lorinda burst out laughing, trying to soften Catherine’s tension.
Lance giving her the cold shoulder was annoying, but Catherine could finally breathe a little easier.
Her relief didn’t last long. Her phone rang, the screen lighting up with a number she recognized instantly. Catherine’s brow creased as she stared at it.
She picked up and moved to the side, answering quietly. “Lance… Okay, I’ll come now.”
Just a couple words, then she hung up and turned to Lorinda. “I have to swing by the office.”
